NEW HAVEN — A 40-year-old man apparently picked the wrong person to try to rob at knife point Monday and ended up at the hospital with two gunshot wounds to the chest, police said.

As the alleged would-be robber lay wounded, his intended victim called 911.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Wooster Place just outside Columbus Park in the Wooster Square neighborhood.

The shooting victim, tentatively identified by a source as Hector Santiago, 40, is expected to recover, and was speaking to police. The shooter, who police said is 65 and from out of town, waited at the scene for officers to arrive and was brought to police headquarters to be interviewed. He was later released, police said.

Police spokesman Joe Avery added that the man brandished a knife, and that’s when his intended victim pulled out a gun. The shooter is licensed to carry the weapon, police said, and there was no information on any charges.

I am really surprised that there was an attempted robbery on Wooster street to start with.

This area is the 5th largest area for Italian immigrants in the entire country. Now, I’m not saying that all Italians are involved in the mafia (heck, my first husband’s family lived in the Wooster street area), but there is an element of the mafia in New Haven. And they do keep their neighborhoods free of street crime which is why I think the would-be robber was from out-of-town or was just really dumb.

That being said, Wooster street is one of the safest parts of New Haven. The food is fantastic, some of the best pizza in the country!! Frank Pepe, founder of Pepe’s Apizza invented the white clam pie. And try one of Sally’s pizzas and you know why people wait 2 to 3 hours in line outside for it. Then walk down the street to Libby’s for Italian ice and cannolis!!

Drool!!!!!!!

I went to Sally's Apizza years ago with a friend that lived in New Haven. I will get back some day and do a pizza tour. It was the best pizza I have ever had. All pizza I have eaten since then pale in comparison. Pepe's white clam pie has my name all over it.

I have heard quite a few local stories like that, and had a friend who used to get lots of great handgun deals through certain connections.

I am not going to lose a $1200 piece that way.

I wonder what the evidence room leakage rate is for Brycos...haha.

Years ago my wife was injured in an accident. She was carrying a rather nice Beretta, and there were quite a few "problems and delays" in getting it back. I am sure they were just an administrative quirk...

So it did leave me suspicious.

Remind me to look for an old clunker left-in-the-rain 1911 shooter at the next gun show..I guess that is the best solution.

Hmmmm, something about that name.....something, something.

It is generally suspected that he's part of one of those troublesome Amish gangs.

There is nothing wrong with .38 or 9mm with proper defence loads.

Glaser Safety are overrated. They make an ugly entry wound, but as far as stopping power you need PENETRATION.

>> When caliber is insufficient just empty the freaking clip.

Bad advice if you’re in Connecticut. This is not Texas. If you empty the entire clip it will look to a local DA as though you “pursued” while the perp ceased to present a threat.

Know and practice “Mogadishu two-step”.

You’re correct in that if you properly place enough .38 and 9mm rounds, you’ll take an attacker down. **IF**

I alternate Glasers with hollow points.

Still, since I know I can hit what I aim at with my P220, I am confident the .45 ACP will do the job, whereas lotsa gang bangers keep right on truckin’ after multiple 9mm hits.

... “I thought, ‘No, that can’t be.’ Then 30 seconds later I see all the police,” she said. “It’s pretty scary in the middle of the day in Wooster Square.”

There was some reassurance that the victim apparently was defending himself... Even so, she added, “If you’re walking your dog, for example, you don’t expect the person next to you to have a gun — for any reason.”...

Clueless twit.

Lederer and Deffendall said the area isn’t entirely insulated from crime, but nothing of Monday’s magnitude. There are periodic muggings and car break-ins, both said.

Deffendall said some residents have been talking about creating an informal night patrol,...

Oh, I dunno. It sounds like a likely place to get mugged - and a good place to go armed if the neighbors were thinking of setting out patrols.

Wow! Missed that part!

Wonder if this is the same “gal”?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecilia_Dougherty

Cecilia Dougherty creates videotapes and digital films which focus on the themes of lesbianism and popular culture. While her early work places lesbians in a cultural territory separate from mainstream society, other projects portray the lesbian experience in terms of commonly-held norms; in her own words, “the life of an ordinary lesbian and her working-class family.”

Just make up the excuse that the guy started moving. Or you did the ‘pray and spray’ method of taking the perp down. You know how the adrenaline flows and you don’t realize how many bullets you’ve fired because it is a very stressful moment in time.
