NEW HAVEN — A 40-year-old man apparently picked the wrong person to try to rob at knife point Monday and ended up at the hospital with two gunshot wounds to the chest, police said.

As the alleged would-be robber lay wounded, his intended victim called 911.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Wooster Place just outside Columbus Park in the Wooster Square neighborhood.

The shooting victim, tentatively identified by a source as Hector Santiago, 40, is expected to recover, and was speaking to police. The shooter, who police said is 65 and from out of town, waited at the scene for officers to arrive and was brought to police headquarters to be interviewed. He was later released, police said.

Police spokesman Joe Avery added that the man brandished a knife, and that’s when his intended victim pulled out a gun. The shooter is licensed to carry the weapon, police said, and there was no information on any charges.

I wonder if any charges will be filed against the shooter?

You mean like bring a gun to a knife fight?

Aww, that's too bad.

Interestingly, the shooter was from out of town. I don't know if that means from far away or from another CT town. I know that when I travel, as I did to Texas last month, I'll bring my gun and check my bags on the plane, so long as my LTCF has reciprocity.

I took it to mean from another CT town, lest they would have used “out of state”.

(but I am assuming that reporters are factually and gramatically accurate)

no, like bring up some BS reason the shooter didn't have a right to defend himself.
After I shot a gang banger that was trying to kill us 6 cops told me it would of been better if he died. Nothing came of it but I feel lucky that nothing did even know I was the victim.

Two slugs in the chest and the perp was [still] talking to police/doctors.

(1) insufficient energy
(2) small caliber (prolly .38 or 9mm)
(3) shot placement (not bad though against a moving attacker)

I recommend he upgrade to .45 ACP / with Glaser Safety slugs and Winchester SXZ 45 hollow points in his magazine.

libs are so confused themselves they don’t know who the victim is.

I have a CCW and carry a little Kel-Tec P-32.

I always wonder what the results would be, charges wise, if required to use it to prevent a robbery of oneself or others.

If there are no witnesses (or if the witnesses are unsure of what they saw or have conflicting testimony) and the robber's knife is somehow lost, a person simply protecting himself might be arraigned for manslaughter.

I realize that the loss of the knife is unlikely, but anything is possible (i.e. if the robber is struck with a bullet but runs and, while running, discards his knife).

Hmmmm, something about that name.....something, something......

Never mind, he’d probably not release his birth certificate anyway.

Just purchased a stainless Smith and Wesson 38 airweight
and with the hot hollow point ammo I have full confidence
in it’s kill power.

But he did do a double tap like you are supposed to. Maybe he was using a .22 or did not use hollow points.

The perforated perp, “Hector Santiago,” no doubt an entirely legal resident of the United States.

I would have been tempted to move along.

i thought the news people were all over the top onthis one - the mood of the coveragewas that the victim ruined a nice, quiet neighborhood by resisting the thug, and should have just turned over his money and let the police handle things.

a ‘mugging gone wrong’ attitude is the problem. the coverage ought to have been “hero thwarts mugging”, but then I expect too much from the left wing media.

Ballistically I heartily agree.

But there are two reasons I rarely carry my beloved 45ACP stainless CCC MKIV:

1) Diffult to conceal on my frame.

2) If used, it may well be impounded for "Evidence". That's too an expensive piece to act as a present for Officer Friendly, sorry.

My compromise solution is a PPK clone, cheap, loaded with HydraShoks and the intent of emptying the magazine, as is proper for a person in mortal fear.

When caliber is insufficient just empty the freaking clip. I haven’t ever heard of a perp surviving getting shot 15 times by a 9mm bullet. Six or seven, yes, but not 15.
