Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon says seniors, kids and out-of-staters should be wary of the Arizona immigration bill signed into law this past week -- warning that it puts them at risk of being arrested.
The law makes illegal immigration a state crime. It gives police the authority to question people about their immigration status and arrest those who cannot show documentation to establish their legal residency.

Because benefits are doled out to anyone who fogs a mirror.
Your theory of personal autonomy is considered quite bogus and always has been.
That was weak. The US Consitution allows Congress to set immigration and naturalization procedures. It has, though the .gov has ignored it. What we are demanding is that it be followed. We allow millions into this counrty legally every year, and we should, and allow them the opportunity to become citizens. THAT is American exceptionalism.
If Congress issues another amnesty, We the People will have a problem with it. And it is our duty to vote the bastards out of office. Again, American exceptionalism.
“How do you propose to get rid of the New Conquistadores?”
Cut off their social services for starters. Agreesively prosecute the people who employ them. They’ll come here as long as the rewards outweigh the risks. Making it easier to arrest people randomly for being Hispanic won’t stem the tide. Taking away the financial reasons for hiring them by hefty fines and be willing to add criminal convictions to the records of the people who employ them.
and if they don’t? and how long could one just stay here without getting caught?
I think they mean "Señors."
so?
or maybe he sees the maricopa county sheriff’s office coming to him and renegotiating their contract with them to house all these people who are now criminals?
Boo hoo, what a LOSER!
The problem of the presence of illegales never loomed large enough before in America for it to be seriously considered that born Americans carry around passports. America wasn’t France, it wasn’t Switzerland, it wasn’t China, it wasn’t any of those places which were habitually overrun enough that everyone had to “show papers, please.”
Establish the presence of a “theory of personal autonomy” or else implicitly confess yet another strawman.
Getting caught is a variable time frame, and irrelevant. Overstaying a visa by one day is a crime everywhere, and becomes a crime the very day that person stays beyond the visa’s term. And the person will be deported when caught... or that is what is supposed to happen under law.
Not sure where you are going with this. Are you unaware of said laws?
Presumably a state could import all sorts of people to populate the place, yet they could never become citizens except according to standard rules established by the federal government.
The 14th amendment modified the citizenship rule, but it didn't touch the immigration rule ~ which remained in the state domain.
The USSC has, for rather minor purposes in a variety of decisions, seemed to rule that the federal government ALSO has some authority over immigration.
I think there's enough Constitutional opportunity for states to exercise control over immigration that it's surprising they haven't done it heretofore.
Could be we didn't have a feeling of "fullness" back when we had only 100 million or so people. With more than 300 million around maybe it's time for the states to set up some controls!
So strange, they always see to be on his side......almost reverently...
The law has that kind of language in it too.
No aiding and abetting, or employing.
It’s really a very good law.

Your theory of overpopulation has always been laughed at.
Oh please, what a drama queen. What happens now if you are pulled over for speeding or something and don't have a VALID drivers license? How about if you cause a wreck and can't produce your insurance card? Before this law, even if the police KNEW the guy was illegal, he didn't speak english, didn't have insurnace and didn't "have his license with him" all they could do is ticket him and let him go. I know, I was hit twice by illegals who didn't have these things and got stuck with the $2,000 deductable because I obeyed the law and had insurance, and the guy who hit me skidded out of town with no way to find him.
I am sick of people talking about this law as if it's something out of the ordinary.
BTW, I also apporove of requiring ID for voting too.
Hey you can be president without a birth certificate so no sweat.
And the illegal problem may not have loomed large in your little section of America, but down here it is huge. You might be willing to allow Americans to be raped, robbed, and murdered just so long as you aren’t inconvenienced, but the rest of us can’t afford such an indulgence.
Insurance covers cars, not people.
