Considering the IAF's kill ratio that is probably the safest option. These aren't the Iraqis that can barely fly their aircraft. Going up against the IAF is no easy kill. They have the same aircraft as the Americans, comparable or possibly better training, and better intel.

Folks, when there is a comment made about shooting down the aircraft of another country (especially Israel), I doubt seriously they mean in aerial combat aka dogfighting. I think the references are to Surface to Air Missiles (SAMs). It's easier to detect a "bogey" lock on and shoot! Then later claim ignorance while asking forgiveness. "Illicit airspace intrusions, tried to gain radio contact and failing that, had to take action yada yada yada..."

If you scramble fighters there is more chance a visual identification will be made so there goes the accidental shootdown aspect of the coverup. Also you get fewer stories from angry US fighter Jocks who might later on gift FOX NEWS with some juicy ammunition. There is also a greater chance that you'll get refusals to fire from the pilots, whereas a missile rarely says "no."

I am more and more glad that I am no longer in the Army. It will come soon down to one hell of a fight and it would be difficult for someone of my generation to fire on Israelis.
