This is beginning to scare the hell out of me. I am in the Airplane manufacturing business, and having our customers losing millions everyday is frightening. The months following 9/11 was devastating on us. What could weeks of closed air space mean?

I heard a report on FOX last night that the airlines are losing 200 million per day because of this :(

“Rick Sanchez of CNN, it’s too cold in Iceland for volcanoes”

I guess Rick Sanchez’s memo did not get to the 130 Volcanoes in Alaska.

http://www.avo.alaska.edu/volcanoes/

And in my State we have 5 including Mt Rainer, Mt St Helens, Mt Baker, Bt Adams, and Glacier Peak And they are covered with snow, ice and Glaciers all year.

If this thing keeps going, we're liable to see people pulling out the old manufacturing plans for WWII era aircraft.

From what I'm reading, that's one air flight technology that could operate in these conditions.

You think they would re-route the planes by that time.

Here is a scenario - NOT a prediction.

The ash continues to be thrown into the atmosphere, disrupting all air traffic to Europe for a couple of years. Certain Asian leaders, where 25 million of their men have no chance for wives, and certain radical Islamic leaders come to the conclusion that without air power, Europe is a ripe plum for conquest. And, without air support, the United States and our allies suffer massive military losses in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Obama asks where is Armageddon. God answers in his own way. He may have given Obama his answer. And as future history noted - Obama presided over the most massive military disaster in the history of the United States.

I’m just glad this isn’t 1984 or 1985, I guess this would have damaged our ability to use, maintain, and sustain our air defenses against a Soviet ground attack.

Glad you called that a scenario, and not a prediction. Scary thoughts...

“Obama asks where is Armageddon. God answers in his own way. He may have given Obama his answer.”

Great Point. He was sort of mocking God, now wasn’t he?

It was my thought at the time that he was mocking God. Of course the spin would be that he was mocking the Republicans because of their opposition to Obamacare. But, he asked the question, and perhaps he is getting his answer. Oh, and I forgot, Obama was unable to fly to Poland because of the volcano. Soon, he might be unable to fly anywhere. But then, in the middle of Armageddon, one would expect that no one will be able to fly.

...no air travel to Europe for two whole years.

Sounds like an opportunity for innovation. I'm no engineer or aircraft person but some smart cookie out there might be able to figure out a way to filter the dust out of the engines - stranger things have happened.

It it does last months, I guess my business, (large NW aircraft manufacturer) is going to be feeling major backlash from canceled orders. I hate to even think of what will happen.

“Red sky at night, a sailor’s delight...”

I am looking at a very orange sunset here in the SF Bay Area. Has the volcanic ash begun to spread eastward ‘round the globe across the Pacific to the U.S.? We will be seeing more red sunsets soon.

This is really pretty scary, the economic impact this is having is devastating,

Yeah, this could actually outdo Obama's deliberate destruction.

Time to dust off the S.S. United States, fastest ocean liner ever built.

For those who don’t remember , the SS United States was the proud flagship of American passenger ocean travel in the post-war era. After entering service in 1952, the luxury liner began a career which saw 700 successful Atlantic crossings until 1969. Using the highest maritime technology, still a marvel today, the SS United States crossed the Atlantic a full half-day faster than its most serious competition the Cunard Queen Mary. On her Maiden voyage in 1952 she won the coveted Blue Riband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic, a record which still holds today!
