HALIFAX — Members of the International Ice Patrol will take part in a ceremony today to remember the sinking of the luxury-liner Titanic 98 years ago.

Scott Rogerson, the commander of the patrol which is based in Connecticut, says they plan to gather at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax where 121 of the ill-fated liner’s passengers are buried.

More than 1,500 died when the ship hit an iceberg while making its maiden voyage.

Rogerson says an ice patrol aircraft will travel to Newfoundland on Friday and, in keeping with tradition, drop wreaths to mark the sinking.

Real tragedy....considering this ship was so far ahead of any cruiseliner at the time.

If you ever get a chance to go to Halifax, Nova Scotia....check out the Maritime Museum....lots of interesting Titanic items.....and also many of the bodies recovered were buried in the cemetary in Halifax...not too far from the museum

It was sad, It was sad,
It was sad when the great ship went down;
Husbands and wives, little children lost their lives,
It was sad when the great ship went down.

"Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax where 121 of the ill-fated liner’s passengers are buried."

In addition to a bunch of my ancestors, also buried at Fairview Lawn are many of the casualties of the great Halifax Explosion of 1917.

My mother, five years old at the time, sat on the bed beneath the blown out skylight in her brother's room and waited for the German soldiers to come down off the roof.

Ironically, the Titanic was only two miles from land when it sank.

Unfortunately, it was two miles straight down.

My Grandfather was on the docks when they brought the survivors in. He was there in an official capacity, but my mother never told me exactly what it was, other than to protect the captain who dressed in women’s clothing to keep from going down with the ship.

Captain E.J. Smith went down with the ship according to credible accounts of that time. Your reference is most likely to Bruce Ismay, White Star's Director. There are some depictions of him donning women's clothing before boarding a lifeboat but Snopes and other sources dispute that.

I'm surprised that TCM isn't showing A Night to Remember tonight, a far better film than Cameron's maudlin effort, IMHO.

I reached over and touched a huge section of Titanic hull plating, including portholes once.
Never in my childhood would i believe that would ever happen.

I also own a piece of Titanic coal.
Pretty cool.
