U.S.: Lebanon at risk if Syria sent Scuds to Hezbollah

The alleged transfer of Scud missiles from Syria to Lebanon's Hezbollah, if true, would put Lebanon at significant risk, the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday.

"If such an action has been taken, and we continue to analyze this issue ... clearly it potentially puts Lebanon at significant risk," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters.

On Tuesday, the Kuwaiti daily Al-Rai Al-Aam reported that Syria has recently shipped ballistic Scud missiles to Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, The White House said it has raised concerns with Syria about the reports about the transfer of Scud missiles.

Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Wednesday "we have relayed our concerns at the highest levels about weapons that could destabilize the region."

Israel this week accused Syria of giving Scud missiles to Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militia.

President Shimon Peres, speaking in Paris, charged that Syria is playing a double game, talking about peace, while it is delivering Scuds to Hezbollah to threaten Israel, according to a statement from his office.

The remarks by Peres went beyond public assessments of senior Israeli defense figures. He gave no details.

Peres' statement was the first time Israel has publicly accused Damascus of providing Scuds.

At the United Nations, deputy U.S. ambassador Alejandro Wolff alluded to the reported transfer of Scuds from Syria to Hezbollah. "We are increasingly concerned about the sophistication of the weaponry being transferred," he said.

Boaz Ganor, an expert from Herzliya's Interdisciplinary Center, said Scud missiles in the hands of Hezbollah could be a game-changer, not only because of their potential for damage.

"In Syrian hands, it was rationally administered, and now it's not clear that in the hands of Hezbollah it will be administered rationally," he said.

If the region is gonna get destabilized, someone’s gonna decide to do it on their terms.

granted - but it’s always nice to have a pretext ;)

... of what? A harsh UN resolution in red ink?

.......On Tuesday, the Kuwaiti daily Al-Rai Al-Aam reported.....

Understand that the message here is delivered by a Kuwatii newspaper. It delivered by a Gulf Cooperation Council Israeli ally in the coming war with Iran. It is more than a newspaper article. It is a warning to Iran.

We know how you play the surrogate game and the game is up.

Not to mention the nursery schools and children’s burn hospitals they’ll undoubtedly hide the launchers within.

I don’t suppose it occurred to Obama that it puts Israel at risk.

Just a matter of time. When Hezbollah’s ready, the next war begins. All that kiss _ss to Assad really worked. Hey Tom Friedman, brightest man in the world, your strategy is in the oven. We’ll see how it turns out. You’re hot, flat, and stupid.

Perhaps not.

China is sending gas via tanker. A Israeli submerged sub already in position could surreptitiously sink it and Iran will have a gasoline problem

China can then wash its hands of it all. We don’t need to risk our treasure. Let it all work out and we can renew our business ties with the new regime

If a SCUD is fired from Lebanon, Israel should hit Syria - hard.

I would be shocked if Israel didn’t bomb Syria if Hezbollah fired one of those SCUDs from Lebanon.

If the weapons transfers from Syria continue, I wouldn’t be suprised if the IAF hit one of those Syrian convoys as it crossed the border.

Isaiah 17

1. The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
