Los Angeles teachers union members have ratified a deal to shorten the school calendar this and next year, officials announced Saturday.
Nearly 80% of United Teachers Los Angeles members who cast ballots approved of the deal, which could save the Los Angeles Unified School District up to $140 million, save the jobs of about 2,100 employees and maintain class sizes.

In government hacks, the unions pay nothing and make the rules.
The LA school system by any measurement is a disaster by the union management.
If LA is anything like here, the quickest and easiest would be to cut administrator’s pay and eliminate about half the teacher aides. Back in the day, we didn’t have aides but now days there are nearly as many aides as there are teachers.
So our kids get dumber and the teachers keep their pay.
Wonderful.
This agreement is malpractice the corrupt board and teacher unions. I thought it was about the children. The federal government should put every board member in jail who votes for this blow against the children. I thought there were standards about school hours. It is unbelievable that the budget deficit will be balanced on the backs of students and parents instead of the greedy teacher unions.
It should be obvious when looking at central LA and the graduation rate is below 35%. Another interesting point is that the percentage that do graduate from High School couldn’t pass a graduation test given in the 50’s. They’ve dumbed down the education so much that colleges have to have remedial reading and math classes.
How about letting go a few overpaid union/administrator hacks? Yeah, a school system that graduates less than 40 percent of its students, so what’s their solution? SHORTEN THE SCHOOL YEAR!!! BRILLIANT!!!!
Privatize the schools, there ill be an incentive to have the kids succeed. The teacher’s unions are all about power, not the kids.
Look at it this way: fewer days of indoctrination.
Our local school district (San Jose Unified) is doing the same thing.
The thing is they are taking a week off in October instead of making the summer longer. How are working parents going to handle that.
(We are in private school, so it doesn’t impact us. It’s already a waste of my tax payer money.)
State employees shouldn’t be allowed to unionize or they should lose their right to vote.
It is as simple as that.
There’s a base conflict of interest in that they get to vote and provide block funding indirectly with our tax dollars for politicians that increase their pay and benefits all at the expense of everyone else.
This is actually a good thing. The less influence they have over the kids the better. I used to hate it when the schools increased the length of time my kids were in school.
So, they have cut about 11 days of instruction from the school year, and they think it is MORE IMPORTANT to keep teachers jobs.
That says it all.
Homeschool.
True.
On the other hand, they lack the critical thinking skills that will help them see through the leftist BS.
Los Angeles is going to look at decreasing tax revenues,a constant stream of retirees and the death of business due to its insane laws.
Giving less school days to these kids means less chances of them getting arrested, tazed or handcuffed for acting like children.
Not to mention probably lessens the chance of suicide or them getting raped.
There is silver linings in every cloud.
