Richard Dawkins: I Will Arrest Pope Benedict XVI

April 11, 2010 Richard Dawkins: I Will Arrest Pope Benedict XVI Marc Horne

Atheist campaigner Richard Dawkins RICHARD DAWKINS, the atheist campaigner, is planning a legal ambush to have the Pope arrested during his state visit to Britain “for crimes against humanity”.

Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author, have asked human rights lawyers to produce a case for charging Pope Benedict XVI over his alleged cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic church.

The pair believe they can exploit the same legal principle used to arrest Augusto Pinochet, the late Chilean dictator, when he visited Britain in 1998.

The Pope was embroiled in new controversy this weekend over a letter he signed arguing that the “good of the universal church” should be considered against the defrocking of an American priest who committed sex offences against two boys. It was dated 1985, when he was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which deals with sex abuse cases.

Responses on this forum are fairly predictable. Members are mostly going to take the extreme religious fanatic viewpoint, forgetting that there are huge numbers of us who are secular conservatives.

I agree that Hitchens is a brilliant writer and very conservative. lavinia

And I see your account has already been banned or suspended. And huge numbers? Ho ho. Are you the Greenpeace writer from India?

Furthermore, it is not an "extreme religious fanatic viewpoint" to say that both Hitchens and Dawkins are way over their heads in terms of basic philosophical argumentation. The people that love their writings are people who, generally, already agree or are inclined to agree with their arguments. But you could drive an 18-wheeler through their pre-pubescent philosophical arguments. If you never care to read a dissenting response, how would you ever know that?

But, God said this is the way it would go down.

Singularly poor choice of words given the context, don't you think...?

Cheers!

Chinese is not a religion.

You're not only moving the goalposts, you're changing the sport in mid-play.

Put down the Calvinball and back away from the keyboard.

The score is still Q to 12.

As atheism is spreading through Europe, so is islam. Atheism is NOT going to defeat islam, regardless of whether a country the size of China squashed some little uprising of islam. As atheism creates a spiritual vacuum, something will rush in to fill it.

With China, part of it is just inertia for now. It’s not because of the persuasive power of athiesm.

Besides, the Crusades did just a fine job of keeping us all from speaking Arabic by now.

Without shorting your keyboard by emitting spittle on it, can you enumerate -- briefly -- what these horrific Marian heresies are?

Not to start a flamewar -- I'd just like to hear "from the horse's mouth" so I don't go by rumour and innuendo. g_w Cheers!

We simply live our lives without the mythology.

Define mythology.

Third, the left is notorious for being soft on child-molesters but, oh, let any religious organization (except muzzies, of course, and Black Liberation Theology) become embroiled in a scandal of a sexual nature, and it’s the end of the world.

No kidding. When it's a girl in a public high school having the school sneak her out for an abortion without her parents consent or knowledge, Planned Parenthood is the hero and you don't hear a peep from NOW about the damage that might be done to the girl from the abortion.

He is not denying the sovereignty of the Triune God alone. In Caritas in Veritate, he says. “Man is not a lost atom in a random universe. He is God’s creature, whom God chose to endow with an immortal soul and whom he has always loved. If man were merely the fruit of either chance or necessity, or if he had to lower his aspirations to the limited horizon of the world in which he lives, if all reality were merely history and culture, and man did not possess a nature destined to transcend itself in a supernational life, then one could speak of growth, or evolution, but not development...without the guidance of charity in truth, this global force COULD CAUSE UNPRECEDENTED DAMAGE AND CREATE NEW DIVISIONS WITHIN THE HUMAN FAMILY...HUMANITY RUNS NEW RISKS OF ENSLAVEMENT MANIPULATION.

That is a clear warning against the wrong kind of global warning!

Read the entire Encylical and try and comprehend it.

Christianity is the only religion equipped to fight islam because it is the only religion which has the truth which is the best antidote to fighting any false teaching.

Social or cultural inertia preventing the spread of islam for a brief time, should not be confused something that has a permanent solution available.

Head of States get to run international children prostitution rings with impunity?

The UN does; a lot of high-ups in the EU did; there are child prostitution tourist trips to places like Thailand; but you don't complain about them.

Not to mention one of Bawney Fwank's room-mates/lovers running that prostitution ring.

But the pope did not.

Color you a troll.

I know someone who was abused. It is horrific, but evil exists everywhere- and in every church. That does not alter the fact that the Catholic Church’s teachings adhere most closely to Christ’s wishes. It is as safe a place as I know to be... spiritually.

I would never leave a system of belief I thought to be Truth because of what a pathetic, evil individual did. I would just punish that individual to the best of my ability. Then I’d leave the rest to God. He sifts all.

I don’t say this lightly. I have had my own heart broken by some leaders in the Church. But I persevere because of Christ’s words and the sacraments. One of my children was an altar server and I kept a very vigilant watch. It took me 7 years to recover from my own hurts from representatives of the Church. No matter what, I would not allow my faith to be like the seed that fell on good soil but was carried away by birds. I believe we should protect our faith from everyone and everything.

No evil human gets between me and my Lord.

I bought the "entire encyclical" and I read the "entire encyclical."

And it is pure, unadulterated communism. It goes beyond socialism. It urges a confiscation of private property which is then given over to a "global authority."

Tossing in a few platitudes does not negate the obvious threat this encyclical poses to all freedom-loving men and women who desire to live in a free republic, and not in a commune.

Roman Catholics appear to have very little discernment when it comes to religion, politics and now, even common sense. If you want to live under a "global authority," then move to Finland or Cuba or Venezuela. As for me, I'll stay right here and try to protect the last vestiges of what was once the most noble and God-glorifying country in history.

When they make stupidity and arrogance a crime, we might have something to get Dawkins on, but until then, I guess our hands are tied.

To James C. B. :You're not only moving the goalposts, you're changing the sport in mid-play.

But James asserts he's right no matter what... like Dawkins and Hitchens like to do when faced with a question they can't answer. James may next argue that anyone who doesn't agree with him must be stupid or insane or have something wrong with them, or some original tactic and thoughtful response like that.
