Look Bain, why is it OK for New Englanders and Brits and Midwesterners to mispronounce words? HMMMM?
If you are going to bust one you have to bust them all for not pronouncing words correctly. If one is ignorant for not pronounce a word the correct way, then others are too who do not pronounce words correctly. You have no leg to stand on.
As a student of linguistics, I can tell you that many words have become a part of English vocabulary which originally were not “real” words, but became the more often used version of the word or became an altogether new word because of their popularity. This is an undeniable fact.
I heard a lawyer/teacher use the non-word “preventative” instead of the correct word, “preventive”. He became agitated when one of his students corrected him and then very embarassed when the dictionary supported the student. HOWEVER, he took refuge in the dictionary’s “ALTERNATE PRONUNCIATION” which was the one he had been using.
Language changes with time and usage and there is no disputing that fact. Sarah is an excellent communicator and people understand very well what she says and means unlike the Great Teleprompter Reader who uses language to obfuscate.
I find it interesting that some ladies posted endless suggestions yesterday on how Palin should adjust her make-up, trim her bangs and stay with “cool colors” so as to improve her presentation and when I say she should correct
her mispronunciation of a word all hell breaks loose.
Something is really off in some Palin supporters.
