Neil deGrasse Tyson on What NASA Means to America's Future (must see vid)
NASAwatch.com ^ | April 5, 2010 | Neil deGrasse Tyson

Keith's note: This video shows Neil deGrasse Tyson speaking at the University at Buffalo making an impassioned plea for NASA and the value it has to all Americans. In my experience, no one has ever managed to capture this in such a cogent response. Tyson is the sort of people who should be speaking at the OSTP space summit. But no. Politics preside. Instead, its OSTP Vs NSC and OSTP/NSC Vs NASA and a food fight over who gets to say what NASA needs to do at the Summit. What a colossal missed opportunity.

We don’t need this guy on the road. We need him in the Senate!

NASA is most impressive, but it is still a bureaucracy. The Constellation Program is a perfect example of this, fabulously expensive, lasting practically forever, and getting nowhere anytime soon.

Whereas I believe private industry is a better way to go, as in having NASA contract with private carriers to get people and cargo to LEO, and then beyond, the current plan is to 1.) Slightly increase NASA budget, 2.) Give NASA oversight on any private spacecraft, launches, payloads, designs, etc. What this means is that NASA bureaucrats, who want space as their monopolistic turf, will simply nay-say and inhibit private space as “unsafe” and “too expensive” while running them out of money. Then they will come back with their hand out again, having ensured that private industry had “failed.”

America is better than that. America can easily rise above bureaucratically-imposed shackles, as long as those shackles are removed. NASA is a self-limiting body. (See Jerry Pournelle’s Iron Law of Bureaucracy) It will stand in the way of private industry, just as the Energy Department and EPA stand in the way of Nuclear power.

Where is the outrage?

Obama is defunding out Space Program - and 7,000 people who work at the Kennedy Space center will lose their jobs in Sept. Peripheral dependent jobs will result in 36,000 losing their jobs, which will plunge the area into 15-20% unemployment. (Ditto for the Houston (Johnson Space Center) area.

Where is the outrage?

Obama has declared this - ILLEGALLY bypassing Congress, whose legal job it is to decide on anything to do with NASA.

Where is the outrage?

BEYOND shutting down our Space Program, obama had directed NASA to funnel the money to ‘mostly Muslim countries” to teach and bring Muslims into the technologies of the space program - teach Muslims how to build rockets and rocket fuel. (How many more Irans?)

Where is the outrage?

Didn't know this part of the equation? Shame on you. READ.

http://www.weaselzippers.net/blog/2010/02/obama-orders-nasa-to-work-with-muslim-countries-yes-nasa-and-no-this-isnt-from-the-onion.html

“(NASA) mission will shift from space exploration to Muslim diplomacy, as per the commander-in-chief’s orders.”

http://www.judicialwatch.org/blog/2010/feb/nasa-focus-muslim-outreach

“Some 7,000 space industry workers will lose their jobs by the time the shuttle program ends, causing the loss of 14,000 public sector jobs and raising the unemployment rate to near 15 percent in Brevard.” (that will actually be about 36,000 out of work)

http://www.floridatoday.com/content/blogs/space/2010/01/boeing-lays-off-36-workers.shtml

and in Houston, even a DEMOCRAT candidate is asking for impeachment:

http://vimeo.com/9235476

Where is the outrage?

Obama, Narcissist in Chief, has the audacity to be going to the Kennedy Space Center on April 15th to tell them all just how wonderful his new policy is.

Where is the outrage?

Where is Congress - CONGRESS is legally charged with making decisions concerning NASA. Obama is by-passing them - illegally.

We MUST - and NOW - email/fax/call Congress and DEMAND they stop this outrage NOW?

(Anyone who doesn't get outraged NOW and demand congress stop this - is aiding and abetting obama in sending our tax money to his Muslim friends to teach them how to build the mega weapons to use against u s- our children. He is not just about destroying America's freedoms - he is about the Muslim take over of our country.

Where is the outrage???

NOW - call NOW. email NOW. FAX NOW. Or YOU are aiding and abetting obama.

Didn't know this? Our NASA money is to go to Muslim countries to teach THEM how to build rockets and make roacker fuel.

“America has always been greatest when we dared to be great.
We can reach for greatness again. We can follow our dreams to distant stars,
living and working in space for peaceful, economic, and scientific gain.”

I’m afraid I don’t know the real origin of the term...but I think
“High Frontier” should be used all day long to remind our fellow Americans
(of all stripes) what space exploration is about.

And if we don’t lead, be sure some nation/ideology will shoulder
it’s way in and militarize space for their own (often evil) purposes.

Uh, can you point out to me in that speech where Ronald Reagan said these reasons are why NASA should always be funded and be the entity that does this and not private enterprise?

I didn’t think so.

There are private entities that are willing to spend their own money for doing such things. I see no reason from any of these comments on this thread that it shouldn’t progress in only that way.

Unless, of course, you want to pay $66 a person for potato chips at a seminar on NASA cost reductions.

No, I would only encourage further defunding of the rest of the government.

I am concurring with you and adding that only those who want to see wasteful spenging can justify NASA.

Swallowed the hype?

Who's stopping 'em?

No problem with private enterprise - they've had decades to get to where the could now pick up the slack and keep us on track so as not to get so far behind China, Russia and others that we won't catch up.

In the meantime, they are not there.

In the meantime, we will have no way of getting our astronauts too and back from the space station, or further. The astronauts will, after this summer, be dependent on the ancient, more dangerous and willy nilly landing area of the old Russian capsules.

If we don't keep our space program going until the gap is filled - we are out of the game.

And that, I believe, it obama's intent. (And others who will benefit from his strategy.)

That would be like saying: Gasoline cars are off the road come September. Only electric cars will be allowed on the road after Sept.

So we go back to riding horses or donkeys until there are enough electric cars on the market. While, at the same time, the money that was going to car manufacture will be sent to Muslim countries to help and train them in manufacturing cars.

Of course, becoming subservient in space exploration/technology is a bit more crucial to our country. But you get my drift = maybe.)

For Democrats...constituents empowered enough to think they can fly into space..is a liability...and means they haven’t been doing their job well enough to keep them subservient and stupid...

For those of you who agree with shutting down our Space Program with a mind to saving money - do you not understand, we will NOT be saving one thin dime - the money is still going to be spent - it's just going to be funneled to the Muslims and “predominantly Muslim countries” per obama’s direction.

So please enlighten me how that is better?

He initiated the space station program.
It is beyond obvious he supported NASA doing human spaceflight.

You are right, we should give NASA a trillion dollars.

I mean, it’s got to be spent by some government agency, right?

It would be better to put those scientists and that money into solving energy problems..

People are not fungible resources you just move around like field hands picking cotton.

Used to listen to Doctors talking about “We don’t care who they are or where they are from or if they can pay for it or not. We are about treating the sick...”

I asked if they worked for free.. A puzzled then unhappy look came across the Dr.s face that was speaking.

I am sick of “Noble People working for a Noble Cause” on the backs of the not so “Noble” Taxpayers.
