At least 70 paramilitary police have been killed in an attack by Maoist rebels in India.
A police patrol was ambushed by several hundred Maoist rebels in the central state of Chhattisgarh.
Dozens of other paramilitary police sent to retrieve the injured were also attacked and an armoured vehicle was destroyed.
The casualties were taken to hospital by helicopter.
The Maoist rebels are demanding the overthrow of the Indian government and are active in up to 20 states across the country.
Violence has escalated in the past two months, in response to a government offensive.
Indian Home Affairs Minister P Chidambaram condemned the latest attack and described the Maoists as savage.
What’s the address? I think I want to move my corporate data center there!
India needs to go and talk to the rebels to find out why they hate them so much.............
Okay. That was a mistake.
The Indians don’t take this sort of crap lightly. They’re going to hunt down the Maoists and kill them, and “collateral damage” be damned.
I’ll bet this is a group that our President can support.
That part of the world is infested with Maoists. They basically run Nepal at this point. Always puzzled me, because out of every political philosophy on earth one might find attractive...why Chariman Mao? He nearly destroyed China.
Follow the money. Who is financing Maoists in countries bordering China?
And it doesn't matter if it works. The only thing that matters is whether it "inspires" people to fight.
I am anticipating that in a few months or a year, Amnesty Etc will decry the savage methods of the India Paramilitaries Froces and the Army and their human rights violation in wiping out the Naxals.
One can hope.

China has always been at war with east asia.
Well, the Eastern Indian States have several very distinct cultures. Why should they not have autonomy if they wish it?

Finance has never been a constraint on Maoist activities in Jharkhand. Jharkhands forest and mineral resources and related industries provide an almost limitless source of extorted revenues. Jharkhand Police documents suggest that a section of contractors, transporters and businessmen involved in illegal mining pay over INR 400 million annually as levy to the CPI-Maoist in the State. Another lucrative source has been the Centres ongoing Golden Quadrilateral road building project. Extortion from the common folk is pegged at INR 10,000 per farmer per year, virtually across the State. The Maoists also have reportedly made deals with poachers, smugglers and liquor and timber runners in the forests. The Maoists have also approached schools for funding their activities. In July 2009, they demanded INR 50,000 from a Government School in Lathehar District's Sinjo region and threatened to blow up the school if their demand was not met. The Maoists have also been known to receive funds from some of the top corporate houses. These companies are big players in the metals, mining, steel and manufacturing sectors. Senior Maoist leader in the Bihar-Jharkhand area, Narla Ravi Sharma, arrested in Bihar in October 2009, told the authorities that the companies regularly pay the Maoists. On March 5, 2010, Union Home Secretary Gopal K. Pillai stated, "They (the Maoists) can now bring many sectors of the Indian economy to their knees. But they don't want to do it today. They know that if they do that now, the State will come down very hard on them. They are not fully prepared to face the onslaught of the State machinery. So, they would rather go very slowly." - Red Money - Tracing India's Maoist Money Trail
