In a dramatic turnaround from 16 years ago, Californians now overwhelmingly favor giving illegal immigrants a "path to legalization'' rather than punishing them by denying them a public education and social services, according to a poll unveiled Monday.
The survey of 1,515 registered voters showed that 67 percent of Californians support a two-pronged approach to solving the illegal immigration problem: implementing stronger enforcement at the border while setting up a legalization path for undocumented immigrants who admit they broke the law, perform community service, learn English and pay fines and back taxes.
Seventy percent favor stricter border controls and a temporary worker program that does not grant illegal immigrants citizenship and requires them to return to their homeland. But only 45 percent favor denying the undocumented an education and taxpayer-funded health and social services.
Dan Schnur, a political science professor at the University of Southern California, said the poll sponsored by the Los Angeles Times and USC's College of Letters, Arts and Sciences showed there was a "sea change'' in Californians' attitudes toward illegal immigration since 1994. That's when 59 percent of the state's voters cast a ballot in favor of Proposition 187, the white-hot measure aimed at denying services to illegal immigrants. The proposition was later ruled unconstitutional by federal courts.
"The conventional wisdom has suggested that the level of support for denial of services had remained fairly constant,'' said Schnur, who once worked for Republican Gov. Pete Wilson, a champion of Proposition 187. But the new poll, Schnur said, suggests otherwise.
One big reason for the change: Younger voters are less likely to favor cutting off services to the undocumented, Schnur said. In addition, the number of Latino voters has substantially increased since 1994.

Methinks they really do want lettuce pickers.
What was he smoking?
Well, what would you expect when you poll a bunch of illegals? This rag is about as well respected as the Jamaican bobsled team.
If i sell everything, EVERYTHING, and a few others get in with me, maybe i could buy a small island somewhere.....anywhere.
And guns.
50 caliber.
30 MM
etc.
Maybe a few secondhand Phalanx, Exocet systems and a few Nike launchers just to be safe.
And mines.
Is there a massive coordination with the media and the White House on this? I am seeing too many articles that is making this far too coincidental.
Any other evidence that the WH is coordinating campaigns with the help of the lapdog media?
Any ideas?
Who exactly did they poll? Did they include illegals that are already here?
Poll Californian's from conservative Orange or San Diego Counties and you would get a different result.
Scratch the Nike.
Thats too tough.
Maybe a black market S-300 system......
I’n the end i’d settle for a few SAM’s....A satelite dish for TV and local sharks with laser beams mouned on their heads.
How ‘bout we do this. Evacuate the few Americans left in California, throw the state out of the union, turn the rat hole over to the illegals and let it fall in the ocean. Sounds like a good plan to me.
LOL.. a sea change.. lol
LAT / USC Poll..
LOLOL

LOL. There has been a sea change because immigration has changed the demograhics of the California electorate. Between 1990 and 2000 the foreign born population of CA grew from 6.4 million to 8.8 million including an increase of 1.4 million Mexican born. The 2008 Census estimate has 13.1 million Latino/Hispanics in CA or 36% of the population. 9.9 million are foreign born or 27% of the population. CA has been colonized.
LOL. McCain advisor.
I utterly despise these people.
Me thinks the 67% is the result of 16 more years of illegal aliens coming into this country illegally. You don’t think that only legal residents are registering to vote do you?
I don’t think it needs to painstakingly detailed.
Obammie and his Commies have stated publicly that illegal immigration is one of their next agenda items. I’ve been screaming this for over a year — that they’d ram amnesty through to replace the independent and moderate voters that put him in office.
The rest of the Leftists know that their part is to make sure the same public (and highly bi-partisan) resistance to amnesty that the country witnessed last time does not occur this time.
The best way to do that is to create a bunch of BS polls that spread the lie that “everyone is for it.”
With 10% unemployment (U-3 — almost 20% by the U-6) and taxes about to skyrocket from the economic policies of Obammie and his Commies — and especially from Socialist Medicine, reform which was needed in large part because of illegal immigrants draining the system — I’m calling BS on all these polls.
There is no way America now suddenly wants all of these illegal workers to be legalized, to vote for more of this leftist economic destruction. And we know that they will not suddenly start paying taxes. That is why they are here, to work under-the-table and to receive social handouts for free (at the taxpayers’ expense, of course).
No we haven’t. It’s a jungle in here.
It’s inevitable, folks.
They can’t destroy our sovereignty without diluting the distinctly American population.
Mark my words, they will hand us over to a global government at some point. To do that they have to end this country.
Look around. If it isn’t obvious to you already that this is what they want then at least keep an open mind to such a thing.
What they don’t understand (they’re evil on wheels if they do) is that they will kill millions, maybe billions in the process.
We’re not evolved enough for this. Especially the ones who believe themselves to be superior to their fellow man.
If they were enlightened they would understand that no man is fit to rule another.
Well, let’s see.
CA now has so many illegals and has become so liberal that financially it is about to collapse. Businesses are fleeing and there is no personal freedom there because of an overreaching government. From what I can see there is no middle class - you are either poor or rich and taxed to death.
Now who did they get to answer this poll? In a few months they will be so bankrupt they won’t be able to pay their workers, and I’ll bet you if you took a poll then they will still insist on tax and spend, and wouldn’t consider voting anything but Democrat.
Californians are opposed to illegal immigration and ethnic/political cleansing even when liberals do the polling.
Well they can say whatever they want, but I don’t believe it.
