Hi all .. I just want to say that the only way you’ll stop those who do nothing but name call is to just call their bluff.
It’s a game! Remember during the 2000 election we had the very same problem. I kept seeing the same people over and over on several threads so I began to keep track of it by writing down their screen names.
Funny thing .. they had a game plan and it was very effective. They would start the game by one person joining a thread and dropping a bomb. By “bomb”, I mean a nasty statement about the poster or about somebody else (at that time it was Bush they were smearing).
Immediately, several people would confront them and the argument would be on! After a few people had joined in the conversation over the “bomb” comment, then a supporter of the original “bomb thrower” would suddenly show up on the thread and of course agree with the original.
This would happen over and over and I began to see the pattern developing. The original bomb thrower would never make another comment, and the ones who joined the original bomb thrower would only reply a few times. Eventually, all you would see would be angry FR people posting to all the bomb throwers .. and the bomb throwers were nowhere in sight. I thought this was very curious.
The reason the bomb throwers were nowhere in sight was because they were just sitting back and watching the rest of the posters go ballistic. That was the object of the game. Drop the bomb and watch the Freepers explode.
After I watched the same game plan develop more and more, I began contacting (by private message) those FR’s who I knew were okay and explaining the game to them. By private messages they told all their regular group or ping lists about the game, and all of a sudden it was a whole new ball game.
The plan we used was to just laugh at the bomb throwers and make fun of them.
Guess what .. the bomb throwers tired of the game (since they could no longer cause us to go ballistic), and the game was OVER!
Maybe you all should develop another plan to deal with the name calling and see if it won’t clear them out.
Remember - THIS IS OUR FORUM - and it’s up to us to set the limits of discourse. If we allow the bad language then they will eventually run us off .. and I simply refuse to go quietly.
Another trick I use is this: When a conversation turns to the person getting so frustrated with my answers that they call me names .. I just tell them “Goodbye”. AND I MEAN IT. No matter what they say to me .. I never, ever, reply to them - I just leave them hanging in the wind - often sending message after message trying to get me to react. It’s a very effective ploy. It stops them - and the next time they see me on a thread .. they never post to me - ever!!
If we want to stop the name calling - it’s up to us.
About a week or so ago there was an article in the press about how the DNC was formulating their plans for fall, and they were going to run against President Bush (even though he will have been gone for almost 2 years). Candidates are planning on saying things like "If you want to go back to the failed policies of the Bush years..." etc. blah, blah.
All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I started seeing comments on forums about how "None of this would have happened if Bush hadn't done TARP" and "Bush started all of this spending".
On the Sunday Talk Show thread hear on FR, we had a pseudo-conservative show up and blame Bush for Obama's election. That guy turned out to be a new register from February.
It is my opinion, and it has been for a long time, that a great many of these "perfect" conservatives are actually democrats whose sole purpose is to divide. They employed this tactic quite effectively in the 2008 primaries, and ultimately a lot of people were lost to FR because of the dissension here.
I also have a list, CyberAnt, and they are people who I am convinced are democrats posting here under a false persona. They often choose grandiose patriotic names and take the most extreme right positions on every single subject. If you support cutting taxes, not good enough: they want income taxes abolished, and if you don't agree you are a RINO. Same thing with Iraq: you want more troops, they want them bombed into the stone age. On and on it goes.
Since apparently people are not willing to confront this type of thing, I no longer post on most threads, preferring to stick to the Dose and the Sunday Thread, where Alas Babylon! at least exerts some control.
I have also found other places on the internet. That's why you guys don't see me very much.
It is amazing to me after all of the Moby talk that people are still being derailed by these people. I hope this post makes people think a little bit.

I can’t remember if I posed a question about her the other day or not, but I meant to as I had wondered the same thing—where was our dear snugs? I was shocked to learn that her last posting on FR was in January. I posted on her FB page the other day letting her know I was thinking of her and missed her. I hope someone hears from her soon!
I saw that you did that onyx. Hopefully she’ll respond soon. If anyone here finds out anything, post it on the Dose.
