Today is national Census Day, the official date used as a marking point for the biennial national population count.
...Texas has been lagging behind the rest of the country.
But our Texas on the Potomac readers say there's a very good reason why they hadn't return them before today: The form states that the Census count takes place on April 1.
Question 1 on the Census form asks: "How many people are living in this house on April 1st?"
..."The form has been widely publicized as being a legal requirement and at our house, we're not about to sign and file with the government a legal document attesting to something as of April 1, until that date has come," said TxPotomac reader Geoff Arms.
Only 46 percent of Texas households have mailed back their census forms to date, lower than the nationwide average of 52 percent...
Ben Tobias... "I believe that the wording in the Census form about information being effective on April 1st causes people to delay responding until after that date," he said.
"To complete the Census earlier that April 1st could be considered fraud on a Federal document because circumstances in individual residences could change."
Michael Gregorio, spokesperson for the U.S. Census Bureau told TxPotomac that the instructions clearly explained that April 1 is not the deadline to return your form.
"It is clear when you read the Census instructions that April 1 is not a deadline for Census participation but only the reference date that the process uses for the count," he said.
"We expect a bump in the participation rate nationwide as of today or tomorrow because some people don't want to return it until after Census day..."

Hmmmm....I didn’t see where I was supposed to sign it....
Oh, well...
bingo!!! exactly the reason why mine isn’t done yet either....
This is fun!
I returned mine. My race is “HUMAN” as are the others in my family.
The question on the census reads (I think): How many people WERE living in your home on April 1, 2010.
If you already sent it in you stated an untruth. WERE cannot be true until it is in the past.
Here is an easier credo to live by :
I ain’t doin’ it.
See ? Simple, to the point, no legal mumbo-jumbo. The administration has decided to nullify the constitution. As far as I’m concerned: There is no United States of America in their eyes. Change has come !
Got my fourth letter today from Census mailed it this past Monday but only answered the Constitutional questionhow many!
lol Texans don’t answer to nobody if they don’t want to.
Texans are an untamable people in an untamable State. Theses are the people who won the last battle of the Civil War, and indeed upon word that Texas was rejoining the Union one of them towns succeeded from Texas and actually defeated the Texas army.
Of course Texas Does have one weakness: Beer!
Thats right, while the Town could beat the Texas army, they could not avoid them all getting drunk that night in the wild party and as a result them all being too hungover the next day to do anything about the Texas army rolling in again and taking em peacefully.
They will send someone to house.
I didn’t see any requirement of a signature, either????
Sounds like the ‘author’ hasn’t a clue as to what he is talking about....
Mine’s not even opened yet.
I disliked being bullied by a government I do not trust.
I find this troubling especially since I live in NC 12, Mel Watts gerrymandered district. Are they trying to count people in heavily democratic districts twice? Remember, 0bama tried to politicize the census and get the responsibility for it moved to under white house control so he and his evil minions could fudge the numbers in favor of the socialist party.
Whatever the reason, this shows firsthand how poorly the census is being conducted by this incompetent government.
So turn em away, honestly if I think ill just give em some false information on the non-constitutional questions in order to favor my area by making it look like their are more prised minority. Racist federal government, ant got no right to make favorable choice on the account of my race or income levels.
Besides thanks to the same racist Federal government blacks and other minority are overrepresented.
Guess again, Ben.
Heck, you must have gotten mine ... I never received even one copy of the census this year.
That’s right. It states, “How many people were living in your house, apartment or mobile home as of April 1, 2010.” Can’t answer that until midnight today. Those of you who submitted your forms already weren’t following the instructions.
Maybe they wanted to count how many illegals were running across their property on April 1.
“Yesterday, I received a SECOND US Census form in the mail. I have already filled one out and sent it back over two weeks ago.”
Same here. The second one I will ignore as it is redundant.
