WASHINGTON (AP) -- It will probably come as a surprise to most Americans, but the winter just finished was the fifth warmest on record, worldwide.
Oh, sure, nearly two-thirds of the country can dispute that from personal experience of a colder-than-normal season.
But while much of the United States was colder than usual, December-February - climatological winter - continued the long string of unusual warmth on a global basis.

If you're going to tell a bald face lie, make it a whopper.
No, it doesn't come as a "surprise" to me. With the world economy teetering on the brink of collapse, funding for the enviromorons is going to become tougher and tougher to get. These lowlifes need to do something to keep the bucks rolling in. If they lose this gig, they're going to find it rough getting another cushy gig like the one they've got.
“But while much of the United States was colder than usual,”
and the UK; Europe; the Middle East; SW Asia; Russia; India; China; but apart from those places, the Northern Hemisphere was quite warm this Winter!
Steve McIntyre or Watts will debunk these numbers soon. NOAA is as corrupt as EPA.
Bull$hit! The US, Canada, and Europe were all cold this winter. It required the data-keepers to move the Russian stations kept in the averages from cold latitudes to warmer regions, to get this result.
In Berlin the ground was covered with snow for two months straight.
When the windchill is 45 degrees below 0, an average temperature of 1.08 degrees F above other years doesn’t amount to much warmth here in MN. It’s still COLD!!! BTW...what is the temperature supposed to be?
Their carefully placed (near heat sources) thermometers will tell them whatever they want to hear.
It's actually not a whopper of a lie. January...globally...was very warm. The problem people have with the warming issue (on both sides of the debate) is keeping perspective. All people tend to think what is happening to them is happening to everyone.
Did you watch the Olympics? See all the concern for the lack of snow? It's because it was very warm in the northwest. It was also EXTREMELY warm in the arctic (and that is a really large area). The reason most of us were so cold was because of the blocking pattern over the pole dumping all the arctic air southward into North American, Asia and Europe. Greenland, OTOH, was very warm. There were days where it was 45-50 degrees in the heart of Greenland...in JANUARY! That was because of the blocking. The Southern Hemisphere was also warm...due to the El Nino.
So...globally...it really was warmer than normal. That warming has nothing to do with AGW...but with the natural cycle of a positive NAO combined with an El Nino and extreme blocking over the poles.
One consequence of the polar blocking: The ice sheet really grew over the winter (http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/images/daily_images/N_stddev_timeseries.png)
It is way above the low tide mark and back to within 2 standard deviations. I do suspect a lot of that will melt though given its 1 yr ice and that doesn't have a tendency to hang around....but its a start. It won't be ice free this summer...hehe...
Warmer winter???
Not according to my propane bills.
How do we know? All the data is routinely cooked.
Caused, no doubt, by copious amounts of hot air coming from Al Gore and his fellow Democrats.
Meanwhile, it’s snowing in SLC, Utah.
Fifth warmest in 100yrs out of several billion years to pick from.
Is that a hockey stick graph or a shovel of BS?
It’s so hot that even the data was cooked!
Seriously, no one believes this crap anymore.
