Senate Republicans have backed away from a plan to offer hundreds of amendments to slow the passage of healthcare reform fixes under budget reconciliation.
This means the Senate will finish work on House-demanded changes to healthcare reform law sooner than expected.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) had hoped to finish the process by Friday or Saturday but now Thursday afternoon appears a possible end-point.

I suppose it makes a certain sense. A few well placed, trenchant amendments is probably better strategy than an endless litany of questionable ones that would only be voted down anyway and probably end up doing more PR harm that good in the process.
Still, it’s disheartening to see yet another cave-in, yet another back-down. Better to have not threatened the action in the first place if you weren’t going to go through with it.
I think I’ll go back to working on the time machine I’ve been building in my garage, folks. The 1980’s are looking awfully good right about now...
Huh???...Sleep is not an option when you are a fight to save our country. The chamber is a fox hole right now, and we need legislators who will charge with baynonets
Amen
We need to grasp this and adjust the game plan to a never before seen level of all out war.
This ain't it.
We spend a lot of bandwidth here blathering on about cleaning house in the Congress in November - but there is still the 800 lb. canary in the room. Where are the replacements? If we are going to truly clean house and not recycle a bunch of political has-beens, the replacement candidates should already be well along in their campaigns - getting name recognition and getting their platforms out.
Instead, we keep hearing about Huckabee, Romney, blah, blah blah. If we are going to truly change Congress and restore the Constitution as the law of the land, we need to have viable candidates with strong conservative track records who plan to push a conservative agenda. Where are they?
The last thing I want to do in November is go to my polling place and discover that I have a choice between the same old candidates and more of the same old candidates. It’s hard to clean house with a dirty broom. We need to start over and completely dump ALL incumbents and restore the Constitution and end the corruption, lying, malfeasance and treason that currently exists in Congress.
Weve decided that offering 200 or 300 amendments doesnt make sense, said Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), one of the Senates leading conservatives.
DeMint said Republicans will narrow the scope of amendments but still make Democrats take tough votes on healthcare.
These votes could be used for campaign ads in October and November.

For one thing, you make them go on the record as being agains such-and-such amendment -- then you use that in November.
basketball must still be going on
The dimoKKKRATS only need 51 votes to pass this POS legislation. The Republicans have no way to stop it. They can only delay it by adding amendments. There is only so much that can be done without the votes. The Republicans gave it the good fight. On to the next battle of the this long war.
My thoughts exactly. The RNC needs to be getting CSpan film to build a campaign spot for every rat to choke on motion by motion.
Hey Mikey Steele, ask us for more money again so we can say NO again!
Well the GOPers have begun to realize that their own cushy government jobs are in peril now that the ire of the real American people has been raised. So they’re trying to calm all of us down and “move on”.
Sorry ... ain’t gonna happen.
Maybe the GOP in the Senate should wear white suits. To match their flag.
I’d REALLY like to believe this is part of a grand strategy — but we’re talking about the Republican Party. They’ve has precious few guts since Ronaldus Magnus left DC in January 1989.
That Jim DeMint was ready to go the distance doesn’t surprise me. Great Senator, good man. Most Republicans, however, will be perfectly happy to leave the majority of this plan intact. Only if we throw them agaisnt the wall and get right up in their face will thay act responsibly — and even then some won’t.
Don’t look to Republicans in Congress, now or after November, to reverse ObamaCare. It’s up to the Courts — the Supreme Court in particular — to hear the hundreds or thousands of citizens cases agains ObamaCare; it’s up to the States that have the gumption to file lawsuits based on violation of 10th Amendment sovereignty, and ALL who will not comply with unconstitutional laws and mandates until the Feds rescind their illegal “laws,” or until the Union is burst open by their power-hungry ambitions.
Yes and replace them with what, Rats?
“...the RATS are voting down every single amendment that the Republicans are proposing - so whats the point of them staying there & going through the motions!”
To show us some guts.
Bingo, just like Grassley’s amendment, it makes them vote on opting out of the exchange again. In Nov. it can be used as It good for the public but not the Dems.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
I'm with you. Maybe the Republicans aren't perfect but I suggest that these people look at the alternative. This is war and we need to stand by our leaders. They've been offering amendments all day long and they're instantly voted down. I thought it looked futile when I saw it earlier tonight.
