Opinion: Health Care Bill: Bart Stupak 'Limits the Harm'
Catholic Online ^ | 3/21/10 | Deacon Keith Fournier

Posted on 03/21/2010 4:06:43 PM PDT by tcg

...what has been clear throughout this extraordinary historic debate was that Congressman Bart Stupak was a faithful Catholic and a faithful Pro-Life DEMOCRATIC Congressman who refused to compromise on the first priniciples.

He has always supported the Health Care Reform package. He is, after all, a Democrat. He simply refused to compromise on the fundamental human rights issue of our age, the Right to Life. For that, he should be honored and thanked by all Pro-Life people.Even if he is wrong.

I was not surprised when he made his announcement. He was surrounded by other Pro-Life Democrats who had made the same decision with him.

He spoke of the "greement we have been able to reach" with the President. That agreement entails the issuing of what he called an "extensive" Executive order by the President immediately upon the passage of this legislation. He honestly believes that with this Executive Order, the current Hyde Amendment language will be protected in the law. He is confident that this Executive Order will ensure that the fatal flaw with this legislation, clearly set forth by the US Bishops, which undermined the fundamental Human Right to Life, will be cured. As a Constitutional lawyer, I strongly doubt it. Though I live in Virginia, I am, to use the old adage I'm from Missouri, show me!

I do not agree with this legislation for many important procedural, constitutional and substantive reasons. However, the first and fundamental reason I opposed it was that it DID indeed open up Federal funds for the killing of innocent children. If it did not, why is the President of the United States signing an Executive Order to cure the Bill?

If the Catholic Church continues to appease liberals then it will wither and die. There is not a Catholic Democrat in Washington who should not be excommunicated. The fact that the Catholic Church continues to maintain openly liberal members has contributed to the reduced participation of the Church, and more importantly the pedophilia that has dishonored the Church. Because of the liberalism that has taken over all organized denominations of Christianity, a more Puritan style of Christian worship is becoming popular. More conservative Christians are seeking an individual relationship with God.

See Luke 16:8--

"The children of this world are wiser in their generation than the children of light."

Score one for the children of darkness.

Catholics are the only ones who stood up for Life since Roe vs wade... Don’t blame catholicism for your revised beliefs.

Christ said Peter Upon this Rock I build my Church it will prevail until the end of time and the gates of hell! Obviousley you think GOD didn’t do a good enough Job and you quit on him! Sorry you did! Please don’t bash Christ church for your decision! Any Other Church is founded by a MAN because he thought they create a Church better than GOD himself!Imagine that one!

An executive order cannot override the law

Exactly. This is just Kabuki for the proles. Once the Bill is law Obama signs an exec order and Planned parenthood takes the President to court, which immediately overturns the executive order. Stupak knows this and can then claim it was the court's fault.

The EO is worthless, it’s the language of the bill that counts. Stupak knew this all along, the EO just gave him cover.

Stupak, during this great season of Lent, and on the Lord’s Day, had a choice to protect unborn babies which is God’s way or do a “Judas” and betray them. He chose the Judas way for whatever reasons. He shows he is no faithful Catholic let alone Christian. He will have to account to God for what he did, whatever happens in his political career.

BTW, at RedState, they are having a campaign to drop off 30 silver coins at Stupak’s offices...

not another dollar to the Catholic Church or any Catholic Charity or a charity even remotely affiliated to the Catholic Church. They can’t even stand up for the one basic Pro Life principle.

Obama's word to issue an EO is worthless. He's going to be a one-term president and he knows it, and that means he doesn't have anything to lose by reneging on that agreement once the legislation is passed.

This is all staged theater to get HC rammed through now, and give the Dems in heavily pro-life districts some kind of "culpable deniability" with the constituents back home come next election.

Don’t Catholics also oppose euthanasia, forced family planning and eugenics? All of that and more is just down the road, thanks to Stupak. “Limit the harm”, my ass, Deacon.

I’m sorry but why does the catholic church have so many pro abortion apologists within it’s ranks?

Stupak is a lying sack of crap, He knows damned well that an Executive Order cannot change a passed law. If it could, Obozo could level any Supreme Court decision too. Hyde amendment is chnged, from what I read, by this law and O'Crapferbrains can't change it. This goes into "law" and he'll be paying for abortions along with the rest of us. All this fiasco is unconstitutional, but we have to go through tons to get it to the Supremes and then who knows what will happen.

Read My Tagline.

He has sown the wind. AA of the House Changes will be ignored so Obama will not feel that he has to issue the executive order. Stupak will not be able to even beat Sphincter (who will not win in the general).

We’ll just have to elect Republicans until the RATs get it that people do not want this medical care.

democrats and religion are not copacetic.
They are at polar opposites.
If a democRAT, then religion does not apply.

I have zero respect for Stupak. He is a great advocate for the sins of jealousy, envy, covetousness and theft. All statists are anti-life. Statism is the death of the individual. In more ways than one.

There wouldn’t have been any harm to limit if he’d had any principles whatsoever.
