Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) said Sunday morning that he is close to striking a deal with the Obama administration on abortion provisions.
"We are close to getting something done," Stupak said in an interview with MSNBC.
Stupak said he engaged in talks late into the night on Saturday night.
The possible deal would focus on an executive order that would specify there would be no public funding for abortions in the healthcare bill.
"We're close but we're not there yet," Stupak said.
Democratic leaders said Sunday they have the votes on healthcare reform, but Stupak said until there is a deal struck, they don't have the votes.
Stupak said "there were eight of us" in the negotiating room with us, all of them no votes.

Hoyer: Not at 216 yet
Hope lives ..keep praying.
I agree.
Bingo
A Rat is a Rat, is a RAT!!!! When the rubber meets the road there are NO pro-life Rats.
Yeah. I was afraid this was going to happen. Tactically, it makes sense to hold out until the end. Ethically, not so much.
Is there a single, principled Democrat?
It is to bad that he was not aborted.
OK - so here is a question - if Pelosi tried to include language in the bill/amendments(to get the Stupak votes) and that idea was soundly rejected by the Pro-abort crowd.... BUT now that same crowd is willing for B.O. to sign this order.... What does that tell you about the effectiveness of the order??? Its pretty black and white to me - it is a worthless offer.
I don’t think “Judas” applies to Stupak. He never was on the side of the Republicans to begin with, nor was he against the whole socialized health care. He just had the one issue that needed to be dealt with...he just needed cover for abortion so his conscience could be clear.
Now if one of Republicans sold out and voted for Obamacare, that would be a Judas.
Would 30 pieces of silver manage to get your vote?
I'd give him a couple of weeks, out of respect for the dead babies, of course. The guy has class. Smart too. < /s>
I've thought that all along, but then I live by a simple rule when it comes to politics: never trust a Democrat. EVER.
Yes.
I am in Chet Edwards district and he could not survive if he voted yes..He has had it easy in the past because of his vet and Fort Hood support...IMO
Not too PRO-LIFE if you can vote to KILL millions,
doesn’t matter if born or unborn...LIFE is LIFE...!!!!!!!!!
What Obama giveth by EO, he can taketh away by EO. Stupak is a total fool.
He seems like a decent man, but he knows Zero IS A LIAR and will probably rescind his EO immediately after the vote.
I pray GOD will give us the VICTORY today, and send these EVIL enemies of our where they belong, crush them LORD, never to rise to the height of their Illusions of Grandeur, self imposed importance.
Stupak is going to take the word on this issue of a character who is fine with babies who survive an abortion being left to die in hospital storerooms?
Stupak should change his name to Foolpak if he buys into an Obama EO to prevent any funds from being used for abortions.
Exactly my thought, and he will. Then Zero will say “Let me be clear, blah, blah, blah.”
