Stupak: We are close to deal with White House
The Hill ^

Posted on 03/21/2010 6:43:30 AM PDT by AlanD

Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) said Sunday morning that he is close to striking a deal with the Obama administration on abortion provisions.

"We are close to getting something done," Stupak said in an interview with MSNBC.

Stupak said he engaged in talks late into the night on Saturday night.

The possible deal would focus on an executive order that would specify there would be no public funding for abortions in the healthcare bill.

"We're close but we're not there yet," Stupak said.

Democratic leaders said Sunday they have the votes on healthcare reform, but Stupak said until there is a deal struck, they don't have the votes.

Stupak said "there were eight of us" in the negotiating room with us, all of them no votes.

And if they have signed off on it, we can take it to the bank that the language is meaningless and/or easily reversible.

If he is responding to the will of his constituents, I don’t think his constitituents are that stupid. They must be telling him no way we back you relying on an EO that can be signed today and undone tomorrow. Stupak will be held accountable either way.

If there was a legitimate deal, it would scare off the pro-abortion Democrats and since that isn't going to happen, then there is no legitimate deal. There will be federal funding to kill babies and Stupak will abort his position for nothing.

Realistically, I think it is too late to be calling their offices. I doubt if they are even open today.

The Dems know that the people are against Obama-Care . . that isn’t the point. They have to figure out a strategy to either survive Novemeber , or else line up a good job as a lobbyist or member of the Obama Administration.

Sanchez and Pomeroy are sweating it the most right now.

Obama will simply rescind the order as soon as the vote passes.

No matter - EO cannot modify statute, that's the same as a line-item veto, which has already been found unconstitutional (because it is).

There are no “undecideds”. Haven’t been for some time.

Those claiming to be undecided are:

A-Holding out for the desired payoff
or
B-Unwilling to admit what they are planning to vote.

I agree, it’s cover. Stupak and the rest know it too.

who is very Pro-Life.

I am not that familiar with his entire history but I can state that if he falls for this E.O. move - he is NOT Pro-Life. This is a useless move that can be (and probably will be) reversed with another E.O.

I will wait to see how he votes before commenting further but I am *not* liking how he's talking....

The Scorpion and the Frog

One day, a scorpion looked around at the mountain where he lived and decided that he wanted a change. So he set out on a journey through the forests and hills. He climbed over rocks and under vines and kept going until he reached a river.

The river was wide and swift, and the scorpion stopped to reconsider the situation. He couldn’t see any way across. So he ran upriver and then checked downriver, all the while thinking that he might have to turn back.

Suddenly, he saw a frog sitting in the rushes by the bank of the stream on the other side of the river. He decided to ask the frog for help getting across the stream.

“Hellooo Mr. Frog!” called the scorpion across the water, “Would you be so kind as to give me a ride on your back across the river?”

“Well now, Mr. Scorpion! How do I know that if I try to help you, you wont try to kill me?” asked the frog hesitantly.

“Because,” the scorpion replied, “If I try to kill you, then I would die too, for you see I cannot swim!”

Now this seemed to make sense to the frog. But he asked. “What about when I get close to the bank? You could still try to kill me and get back to the shore!”

“This is true,” agreed the scorpion, “But then I wouldn’t be able to get to the other side of the river!”

“Alright then...how do I know you wont just wait till we get to the other side and THEN kill me?” said the frog.

“Ahh...,” crooned the scorpion, “Because you see, once you’ve taken me to the other side of this river, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with death, now would it?!”

So the frog agreed to take the scorpion across the river. He swam over to the bank and settled himself near the mud to pick up his passenger. The scorpion crawled onto the frog’s back, his sharp claws prickling into the frog’s soft hide, and the frog slid into the river. The muddy water swirled around them, but the frog stayed near the surface so the scorpion would not drown. He kicked strongly through the first half of the stream, his flippers paddling wildly against the current.

Halfway across the river, the frog suddenly felt a sharp sting in his back and, out of the corner of his eye, saw the scorpion remove his stinger from the frog’s back. A deadening numbness began to creep into his limbs.

“You fool!” croaked the frog, “Now we shall both die! Why on earth did you do that?”

The scorpion shrugged, and did a little jig on the drownings frog’s back.

“I could not help myself. It is my nature.”

Then they both sank into the muddy waters of the swiftly flowing river.

eff this guy. He is gonna be the one to push this through.

And I got tons of $h!+ from pro-life Catholics noting that this guy is a scham and if the Repubes didn't vote for "Stupak" this bill would have been dead last December.

He is a brilliant plant IMHO and will role us all.

If he cuts a deal the Liberation Theology (social justice) wing of the Catholic Church gets their socialized medicine, they get to keep their hundreds of hospitals open, and they 500,000 people employed. Remember, they need to save face as well since they vowed to shut the hospitals down, if it is a pro-abort bill.

I am not trying to be Anti-Catholic here, I am calling as I see them.

He wants his name to go in the history books as the Rocky of healthcare and the “one” that brought it home.

I think he is too stupid to understand that’s now how history will reflect on him.

Of course he is being played...

Or has he been playing us all along?

and - do the others in his 'group' vote as HE says - or will they hang tough, knowing the EO is as worthless as the signer of it?

It’s also an EO that will never be written. The Bamster’s promises are void as soon as they come out of his mouth. This is political cover for Stupak, nothing more.

The Rats know this is unpopular, so they are looking to protect as many other Rats as possible. Stupak is being called in because they need him.

Chet Edwards, for example, has been given permission to vote against it, cause he’s in a big fight in a relatively conservative area of Texas.
