WASHINGTON An al-Qaida leader believed to have played a key role in the bombing of a CIA post in Afghanistan last December was apparently killed by an American missile strike last week, a senior U.S. official said Wednesday.
The counterterrorism official said Hussein al-Yemeni was believed killed in a strike in Miram Shah, the main town in North Waziristan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive information.
Drone strikes in Pakistan's border region, largely conducted by the CIA, have escalated in recent months, proving an effective way to target al-Qaida and Taliban leaders hiding in the rugged mountainous border. While Pakistani officials have criticized the strikes, it is widely believed that Islamabad privately supports the attacks and works with the U.S. to provide intelligence.

SNIPPET: “Some comments
I have to assume that al-Balawi was thoroughly debriefed by al-Qaida before being sent on this mission, and I’m surprised no one has sought to correlate his “infiltration” of al-Qaida with Abu Yahya al-Libi’s book released over the summer: “Guidance on the Ruling of the Muslim Spy”

ACLU sues gov’t over drones
By JEN DIMASCIO | 3/16/10 7:14 PM EDT
The American Civil Liberties Union sued the federal government Tuesday to learn the use of unmanned drones for targeted killings by the military and CIA.
In particular, the lawsuit asks for information on when, where and against whom drone strikes can be authorized, the number and rate of civilian casualties and other basic information essential for assessing the wisdom and legality of using armed drones to conduct targeted killings, the ACLU said in a statement, announcing its action.
The nonprofit civil liberties group filed initial Freedom of Information Act requests with the Defense, Justice and State departments and with the Central Intelligence Agency on Jan. 13. Only the CIA responded, and the ACLU is pursuing that request with an appeal to the agency.
The military and intelligence communities have increasingly relied on Predator and Reaper unmanned drones to capture video imagery and launch deadly missile strikes, particularly lately in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan. The Pentagon, especially, continues to purchase more and more drones each year.

Protecting Terrorists in this country isn’t enough for the ACLU?
Hopefully this hit is soon confirmed by our side.
Usually a few days later, we’ll get a confirmation or no go from the DoD. This is a big hit so they are a little more cautious.
Hate to see a perfectly good armament go to waste on a bunch of peeons.. but we take what we can get.. until the ACLU sues to take away the birds of death raining hellfire on ‘hot’ militant compounds. bastards.
