House Democratic leaders still do not have enough votes to pass health care reform, the chamber's top vote counter said, even though the administration is aiming to have the bill passed this week.
The reality check came from Rep. James Clyburn, the House Democratic whip.
"No, we don't have them as of this morning, but we've been working this thing all weekend," Clyburn, D-S.C., said.
But despite the challenge of corralling wavering Democrats, Clyburn joined with other Democratic officials in saying he was confident the measure would pass, echoing comments from Speaker Nancy Pelosi Saturday.
Democratic leaders want the House to pass the Senate-approved version of the bill, before moving on to a package of changes. That package, which is already under consideration, would be taken up in the Senate as a "reconciliation" bill, meaning the Senate would be able to approve it with just 51 votes -- Democrats turned to the legislative tactic after Republican Scott Brown won the Massachusetts Senate election in January, breaking the party's 60-vote filibuster-proof majority.

Yeah? Do you see anybody stepping up to the plate to lead an action to “exert their power over the three branches of government.”?
I’m asking about a leader, as in somebody who can organize, lead, motivate, instigate, inspire others.
I’m too ill to do it. I simply don’t have the strength and stamina to do it. I have about 40% heart function and that’s not going to improve, not much, anyway. As for what I’ve done, I’ve attended nearly every gathering of conservatives and protests at our state capitol, sent hundreds of emails, faxes and made several hundred phone calls. I tell friends and relatives about this stuff and do my best to impress upon them the crisis this country is in. A few have become active. I do what I am physically able to do.
So, I ask you again: Who’s going to step up to the plate and lead this exertion of our power over the three branches of government? What are you doing, besides sitting back and expecting enough people to have a sudden, bolt from the blue, magical epiphany about what’s really going on in this country that this exertion of power over the three branches of government will magically come to pass without leadership, organization and inspiration?
Called Congressman David “never saw a pelosi bill he didn’t like” Scott of GA. They actually answered and I expressed my opposition to the bill. They will pass it on to Congressman Scott. I explained I get to vote too in November
We at FR and other political fora are well aware of this crisis, but there is a huge majority in this country who are clueless as a bag of hammers. Without leadership, there is no en masse way to alert them. Relying on such a large number of people to suddenly experience the miracle of true political awakening is not realistic.
About 60% of the people in this country can’t name the VP, can’t name the Speaker of the House or even know what the Speaker is or what the House is or name the three branches of government or even know that there are three branches of government.
So who is going to step up and alert them such that they step forward to “exert their power the three branches of government.”
You seem like a real good person, a fine American and somebody who’s corner I’d be in whenever needed, but I’m afraid you are either naive or living in denial of the possibility that America could go the way of western Europe or, worse, the way of a Venezuela-type authoritarian regime. All it takes for either to occur is to have a majority of fools voting, and we’ve already proven we have that by the election of zero. Your confidence in your fellow Americans to “exert their power over the three branches of government” is not born out by their recent political decision to elect zero. Believe it or not, most really aren’t paying attention to any of this. Your confidence in them is misplaced and that is why we need a leader to step up.
