I hope they keep their politics out of it and don’t use the portrayals of these fine men to vicariously espouse their (Hanks/Speilberg) liberal views through the screenplay.

Dilemma is: would love to support/watch this program but cripes!!! the a**wipes who have made it are illiterate boobs (Hanks and Speilberg) who are best friends with most of the foreign enemies of the USA. Because of thinking like these guys, too many sacrificed all...can’t seem to shake that belief...
My Dad was a Mechanist Mate as well on the USS Lewis. His ship almost capsized during a Typhoon!! In his case he was well suited for his job, he could build and fix almost anything. He had served in the Navy aboard the Cruiser USS Richmond at one point. He was assigned to Pearl Harbor, but he left when his enlistment was up two months before the attack. He worked in a war related industry, but finally went back in. In late 43 I think.
Believe it or not, the entire Victory at Sea DVD set is selling at Walmart in the $5 section! I bought it of course... FIVE BUCKS!
Hanks has crowed all week about how it will show US troops doing awful things to the Japanese, so I wouldn’t expect much.
I always wondered how the Greatest Generation brought about the spoiled generation (and yes, I know plenty served in the Armed Forces during the 60s and 70s but that certainly doesn’t seem to be the lasting legacy of the boomers).

No, I actually have been waiting for this since it was announced a few years back. It is clear that despite Hanks and Speilberg’s Liberal Pro Obama views, etc, they and the entire Production crew on this series felt the Moral responsbility to get the story historically correct and faithfully portray the events as recorded by Leckie and Sledge in their Memoirs of the War, along with Chuck Tatum’s Book which gives the account of Iwo Jima where John Basilone gets killed and record the events that occurred in October 1942 where Basilone won the Medal of Honor.
I have been examining some of the HBO trailers that have been put out on Youtube and there are marines who are alive who served with each of these 3 marines and I have not seen any of them criticize the accuracy of the series.
So again, despite Hanks and Speiberg’s liberal political views, they tried to portray the events historically accurate rather than follow some marxist-deconstructionist view of the Pacific.
HBO recently put out a 5 minute trailer and it is powerful, very powerful.
Our generation would be hard pressed to find a family who didn't have someone, or multiple someones who were there. If not Navy, the other branches of the military. Still It's interesting how many have parents who were there.
Oh and forgot to add, we have lots of pictures!

And those scenes are actually what occurred. I thank God have never been to war and the guys in this series are true heroes, but what is in the series is based on the accounts of the war as experienced by Robert Leckie, Hugh Sledge and John Basilone.
Perhaps you should read the books yourself, i.e. A Helmet for my Pillow and “With the Ole Breed” and compare the books with the series.
I don’t think Hanks is saying anything different from what every Marine or Army veteran has said about the war in the Pacific. It was much more brutal than in Europe because other than the SS, the Wermecht, i.e. regular Germany Army still followed Western Civilization codes of behavior in war and when they were defeated, they would surrender. Against the Japanese, if there were 20,000 or 30,000 Japanese milatary on an Island, the Marines were going have to Kill 99% of them and I don’t think there is any pretty way to do that, as necessary as it was to do.
One of my friends who has since died was a medic at Iwo. I am sure they will do as good a job with Pacific.
My late FIL was a childhood and lifelong friend of Dr. Sydney Phillips. I’ve been lucky enough to speak with him on several occasions. He’s a great guy, true patriot, and quite a character with a wonderful sense of humor.

Just a thought mind you, but I believe it was the quest to have better for their children, especially better in the area of education. So the overwhelming majority of those who went to college ended up being led into the hippie movement by socialist professors, already in place, who taught them how oppressed and denied they were, how evil their parents were for serving in war time, and the gullible generation fell for it. Young people are by nature rebellious, and higher education took and continues to take, full advantage of that.
It gave way to the feminist movement on a much larger scale too, which taught young women to shun their inhibitions and instincts, as well, creating a generation of young women consisting of half who in effect became emotionally unhappy and just plain messed up.
They raised what children they had, and there ya go. Can’t mess with nature.
Complaining about the repeated showings of the mental romper room "Bill Maher" and Tom Hanks somewhat weird comments. Most of all, we seem to agree that after 10 Weeks, very few of us will keep HBO.

I know see the comment Hanks made as I read where he was interviewed by Doug Brinkley and made the “racist and terror” comment, etc. I think there will be enough backlash against him based on these comments, heck the Japanese were far more racist than anything in the U.S. during 1940 as there treatment of Chinese and Koreans demonstrated starting in 1937. So I see what you are getting at. Nevertheless, Hanks as an interpreter of History is what he is, a deconstructionist liberal but I think his co-producers and directors and script writers still did a great job with the series. If Hanks wants to try and give it a liberal bs slant, then we can go after him on that.

I’ve got a shelf full of Leckie books (and have read them). I didn’t know this was based partly on his work. Too bad this idiot Hanks has to be involved. Hopefully, he just put up money and said, “Make sure they look like racist rednecks!” and the actual filmmakers said, “Okay, Tom. Sure. We’ll get on that. Nut.”
