WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell by 6,000 in the latest week, the second decline in a row, but the U.S. jobs market remains frail.

In the week ended March 6, initial claims fell to a seasonally adjusted 462,000 from a revised 468,000 in the prior week, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

Altogether, 11.36 million people were collecting some type of unemployment benefits in the week of Feb. 20, down from the previous week's 11.48 million. The numbers are not seasonally adjusted.

So, the way I read it, a lot more people filed for unemployment, but not quite as many as the week before. About 1 percent fewer. Is that the really good news the media wants us to take from this?

And then the number applying for benefits will be unexpectedly adjusted upwards later on.

The Census has picked up about 250,000 people for temporary positions, and I imagine that has some bearing on this. The real story will be in the analysis of the other numbers that came out along with this bullet...

So 120,000 ran out of their benefits?

2,000 greater than expected, BTW. Not a good report.

It is just an “unexpected” drop in the “unexpected” RATE of job loss.

I remember when it used to be reported by how many new jobs were created.

The headline should have read something like this:

“Although the US is still hemorrhaging jobs the loss was 6K less than expected”

The article mentions that there was an increase in job openings, driven by health care, education, and technology. If the numbers are in that order, that’s a sign of a hollow economy.

This is what long-term malaise looks like. I see nothing on the horizon to greatly alter the trend.

It’s so funny they make it sound like it’s improving when just about half a million people lost jobs.

Just damn.

I’m only losing 2 of my limbs this week - so that’s better than losing 3 of my limbs so things are improving!

How do you “Seasonally Adjust” a jobs report? You either have a job or do not.

Money quote:

“The four-week average of initial claims - a better gauge of employment trends than the volatile weekly number - rose by 5,000 to 475,500. That’s the highest rate since late November.”

The traitors in Washington won’t let a crumbling job market get in the way of their plan to pass an amnesty bill. Millions of Americans can’t find a job but the people who supposedly represent our interest want to add 20 million illegal immigrants to the competition. This bill will be the final straw that brings America down to third world status.

Yep, and they get that dip by having ‘revised’ numbers....but they believe we are gullible enough to believe them....
