RICHMOND -- Hoping to quell a growing uproar on Virginia's college campuses over gay rights, Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) issued a directive to all 102,000 state employees Wednesday that prohibits discrimination in the state work force, including on the basis of sexual orientation, and warns he will reprimand or fire anyone who engages in it.
McDonnell's directive comes a week after Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli distributed a letter to the state's public colleges and universities asking them to remove references to sexual orientation from their campus nondiscrimination policies. Cuccinelli argues only the General Assembly has the authority to extend legal protections to gays.

Means nothing but now the homosexual lobby will be trying to kiss up to the governor ~
or tickle him like Eric Massa
Does that also include sexual disorientation?
I see nothing wrong with what I read on the title of this thread.
The law should not discriminate against anyone ( gay or straight ) when it comes to employment or application for acceptance to college.
Gays have civil rights too. I only draw the line when they demand SPECIAL RIGHTS.
I think this is more Washington Compost disinformation.
Another politically correct capon. FU McDonnell
Thats pretty vague. Is child molester a sexual orientation?
No they will be trying to get homo-indoctrination into kindergarten and all kids of other things/ There will never be “enough” for them.
Not likely McDonnell will hear any of that.
Bob McDonnell is a middle of the road Republican. Moderately conservative, not a RINO but not a Sen. DeMint either. Ken Cuccinelli is a rock solid conservative. What you see is what you get.
This whole “controversy” is just an organized political smear campaign that is reminiscent of the macaca incident with Sen. Allen. Frankly, Gov. McDonnell looks to have helped AG Cuccinelli by defusing the issue. I wouldn’t read too much into it. I think both the Governor and the AG are keeping a solid eye on the 8 ball; getting AG Cuccinelli in the Governor’s office 4 years from now.
All Ken C did was say it was the AG not the school that handle discrimination.........I have no problem with that!
The libs went nuts (as if they could go more nuts then they already are). They have been nasty on his face book page..
Ken Cuccinelli for President.
Cuccinelli can’t appreciate being cut off at the knees....
It didn’t take too long for the Gay Power lobby to rein him in, did it?
McDonnell is doing this to try to diffuse what should never have been an issue. Cuccinelli has correctly applied the law.
Warner and Kaine issued Executive ORDERS forbidding discrimination based on sexual orientation. They were in violation of the law. Kaine was advised of such by then AG McDonnell.
McDonnell has issued an Exectuive DIRECTIVE (maybe a first?) which outlines the intent without violating the law. The directive does not carry the same weight/authority as an Order. This is entirely consistent with everything he said during the campaign.
Also note that McDonnell rescinded Kaine’s Executive Order regarding health benefits for same sex partners saying that this should be done through the General Assembly.
Both McDonnell and Cuccinelli are correct. If there is to be a policy of non-discrimination for same-sex individuals, it must be codified through General Assembly action.
I’m not sure why Cuccinelli chose to bring this issue up at this time (was he prompted by a question?). But we’ve spent a week on this and have been distracted from the work on the budget where the Senate Dems and RINOs are trying to sneak in new taxes described as fees.
Thanks for the clarification, Corin. It didn’t take long for some to jump on McDonnell, did it ? Maybe you could share with some of the naysayers who interpreted the WaPo exactly as it wanted, and saw a divide between McDonnell/Cuccinelli where none exists.
Fix Washington State before you start criticizing Virginia and Virginians.
>prohibits discrimination in the state work force, including on the basis of sexual orientation, and warns he will reprimand or fire anyone who engages in it.<
In other words, McDonnell is saying no special treatment for anyone, regardless of sexual orientation.
