Mitt Romney: Pro-Choice? Who, Me? (Mitt now claims he was NEVER Pro-Choice)
The American Spectator ^ | 3-10-10 | James Antel, III

It's early, but Mitt Romney still seems intent on repeating his mistaken 2008 handling of the abortion issue. Here he was today on "Imus in the Morning":

Mitt RomneyCARE on Letterman (actually choosing the same night as Gov. Palin on Leno,
And after Letterman attacked Gov. Palin’s daughters!):

Mitt RomneyCARE (D, RINO): "I'm not running as the Republican view or a continuation of Republican values.
That's not what brings me to the race.

(Backstabber Romney Video, accessed 9/19/07)

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party
over to the traitors in the battle just ended.
We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged
to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support.
Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates
wouldn’t make any sense at all.""

--  President Ronald Reagan

Romney (Carpetbagger shapeshifter, D, RINO): ”I'm very clear I think, to the people across the Commonwealth
my "R" didn't stand so much for Republican as it does for reform.
"
(Flip-flop chameleon artiste and Mitt RomneyCARE
Video, accessed 9/19/07)

"A political party cannot be all things to all people.
It must represent certain fundamental beliefs
which must not be compromised to political expediency
or simply to swell its numbers."

--  President Ronald Reagan

This was Hotair’s summary. For some reason, I could not post their link directly, and got the Imus interview link:

Romney: Hey, I never called myself “pro-choice”

My most complete treatment of Romney’s abortion zig-zagging appeared in this review of Hugh Hewitt’s book. But Romney’s problem has never really been that he changed his mind. It has been the fact that he can’t resist insulting people’s intelligence about his past record when discussing his current position. This is a perfect political climate for Romney to downplay abortion and run as an economic problem-solver. But if he continues to pretend he was never pro-choice or play word games about his previous stance, abortion will plague his candidacy again in 2012.

Mitt, you lie.

We’re each entitled to strong personal beliefs. And we encourage other people to do the same. But as a nation we recognize the right of all people to believe as they want and not to impose our beliefs on other people. I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my Mom took that same position when she ran in 1970 as a U.S. Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v Wade has been the law for 20 years that we should sustain and support it and I sustain and support that law and the right of a woman to make that choice.

Willard, you said this in 1994, so for 24 years you believed this, just like your Mom(!), and now all of a sudden you're a new man?! In 2002, you reaffirmed this life-long bedrock position again ... "I’ve been very clear on that. I will preserve and protect a woman’s right to choose."

Slick Mitty go away. We're not buying.

Today: MITT ROMNEY: Well, you know, I never really called myself pro-choice, but I did say when I was running for governor that I would keep the law as it was.

Before: A politician who once movingly described becoming pro-choice when a family friend died from an illegal abortion now says he became pro-life after hearing a scientist use the word “destroy” while talking about stem-cell research (an account the scientist disputes).

Who is this Romney guy?

Wow.

I seem to have whacked the hornet's nest.

FWIW, the content of that video is but one reason I don't support Mitt any more. I was convinced against him a while back, and he just keeps digging the hole deeper.

I just think some of the criticism against him goes over the top and into DU-land. Just sayin'...

You've aptly demonstrated that the plain truth is enough. Mitt is no conservative.

Next, Willard will claim he was never for Romney-Care in Massachusetts.

Yep. But the record and his own words and actions will debunk that too. Rats, Mitt foiled again (by himself) ...

Romney Gives Mass. Health Reform an 'A'

The portrait depicts the governor seated at the front edge of his desk wearing his trademark business suit. Beside him is a small framed photo of his wife, Ann, and ... [wait for it] ... a copy of the health care reform law he called his greatest achievement. [note to mittbots; since this was June, 2009, this means he claims credit and praises the disaster of a healthcare plan the MASS Dems produced]

Boston Globe;
"Now, his campaign is trying to explain a photo, sent to several news organizations today, that shows him at a fund-raiser for the abortion provider.

snip
Romney's campaign acknowledged in May that Ann made a $150 contribution to Planned Parenthood in 1994, but his spokesman Kevin Madden said at the time, "Since it was so long ago, Ann has no information of the circumstances."

Romney has said he changed his mind about abortion starting in 2004 after talking to scientists about stem cell research.

Romney dismissed any significance of the photo.

"I attend a lot of events when I run for office. I don't recall the specific event," Romney said while campaigning today in South Carolina, according to the Associated Press. "I think I've made it very clear. I was pro-choice, or effectively pro-choice, when I ran in 1994. As governor I'm pro-life and I have a record of being pro-life and I'm firmly pro-life today."

His campaign also issued this statement today: "Governor Romney is firmly pro-life and has made it clear that as president he will advocate for a culture that welcomes life and protects the sanctity of life. Like Ronald Reagan before him, the governor has changed his position on this issue and changed it in the right way. Governor Romney does not regret, and won’t apologize for the fact, that he has become pro-life."

On the photo specifically, the statement said, "As Mrs. Romney has stated previously, she is unfamiliar with the circumstances of a check she wrote close to 14 years ago. During his campaign for US Senate in 1994, it would not have been out of the ordinary for the governor to have attended an event, out of the hundreds that any candidate would attend during a campaign season, which involved a voter coalition and also have his wife accompanying him."

Abortion is one of those issues that is driven by emotion and therefore can’t be solved, without people of courage and wisdom addressing it. I would like to see rational position statements from all candidates posted and discussed here.

There are legitimate prenatal medical issues that must be decided (within guidelines) by the medical facility and attending physicians and the patient. Any attempt to dictate or control these decisions will result in what we fear in the current health care proposals as well as decisions like those commonly seen under “zero tolerance” laws/policies.

The other issue is the use of abortion as a means of birth control. Each candidate should be asked their position on this as well as how they would avoid interference with the legitimate medical issues. Oh yes, each candidate should be required to answer this question “what is the difference in “partial birth abortion” and a teenager throwing a living/ dead fetus into the trash. The only difference I see is that the government demands the right to make the decision.

On a personal note, the daughter of a friend discovered, late in her pregnacy, that she had cancer. Her decision (with consultation with her doctor and family) was to delay treatment (since then I have read of successful pregancie with treatment). Sadly she died but my friend has a healthy granddaughter. I saw the heartbreak of this decision, I DO NOT WANT THE GOVERNMENT INVOLVED IN IT.

Be nice if this forum could discuss these issues and knock off the personnel attacks... rule 13 is for THEIR side.

FR is pro-Life. THAT is not debatable! Period!

If you want to push abortion you can do it somewhere else!! (also not debatable)

Abortion is one of those issues that is driven by emotion and therefore can’t be solved, ...

What drivel.

"Abraham Lincoln recognized that we could not survive as a free land when some men could decide that others were not fit to be free and should therefore be slaves. Likewise, we cannot survive as a free nation when some men decide that others are not fit to live and should be abandoned to abortion or infanticide. My Administration is dedicated to the preservation of America as a free land, and there is no cause more important for preserving that freedom than affirming the transcendent right to life of all human beings, the right without which no other rights have any meaning." ... Ronald Reagan

Okay, let's take abortion off the table with regard to this article and your guy Mitt. He is still Unfit For Command because he's a LIAR. Regardless of his position on abortion he is not authentic, conservative or truthful.

Btw, when were you appointed FR hall monitor?

* an undercover Romneybot is one of those that "doth protest too much" they say "I am not a Romney shill" and then go on to either shill for him or lament how mean everyone presenting the truth about him is and how they are just haters and how they themselves are above all that yada yada yada...

This is your forum, and with all due respect, I believe my position IS pro life. Life and death decisions have to be made. Mothers die, babies die sometimes terrible decisions have to be made (this is a different issue than obortion for birth control). I don’t want the government, you or anyone else to get between the doctors and the patient in making that decicion. If that offends you, I am sorry.

That also seems, to me, to be a main issue in what Obamachare is attempting to do with health care. They are attempting to insert themselve between the doctor and patient (something Rush discussed in his case) and we see in other countries how this has worked out.

IF this fraud chooses to run in 2012, the truth will play a big part in killing off Willard's candidacy again.

Romneybot, yes. Just practice. And that statement cried out for a rebuttal, even if only for the lurkers.

The bigger question is, does Chuck know that someone is usurping his FR role as chief hall monitor and "mini-mod".
