A group that includes leading conservative lawyers and policy experts, former Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr and several senior officials of the last Bush administration is denouncing as shameful Republican attacks on lawyers who came to the Obama Justice Department after representing suspected terrorists.
Senate Republicans have demanded details of the lawyers' past work and Liz Cheneys group Keep America Safe has questioned their values." A drumbeat of Republican criticism forced the Justice Department reluctantly to identify seven of them last week. But the harshness of the criticism Keep America Safe labeled a group of them the Al Qaeda Seven has provoked a backlash from across the legal establishment.
We consider these attacks both unjust to the individuals in question and destructive of any attempt to build lasting mechanisms for counterterrorism adjudications, wrote the 19 lawyers whose names were attached to the statement as of early Monday.

Eh, not really. High profile does not leader or conservative make.
Why don’t sharks attack lawyers? Professional courtesy.
99.999993% of the lawyers make all of them look bad!
This isn’t about the GOP it’s about scumbag, sell out lawyers who don’t want their values challenged while they drag good and decent people through the mud and the slime while the ‘defend’ their pos clients.
Nope.
The only way that these guys/gals will find their "clue" is when they get the notice that they need to "find a new day job!"
Steele is first!
“F” the GOP...go get em’ Liz!!!
Q: How many lawyers are needed to roof a house?
A: Depends on how thin you slice ‘em.
BINGO! I'm with the “other critics”. If our laws are going to require terrorist to have lawyers then those lawyers should give up their rights to work in any legal capacity for the Government forever.

That headline is rather misleading. It implies the GOP at large criticized Liz. The list constituted a bunch of lawyers who worked with some Republicans. They’re 2nd and 3rd tier at best.
Here's Ben Smith's original article and it's pablum title:
Then the GOP needs to show their support for Liz and agree that lawyers that worked for terrorist don’t belong in the DOJ.
If they had’nt squawked, no one would have know their guilt. This whole ‘try-’em-in-a-civil-court routine was designed to produce $ for the legal pockets from the get-go, anyway. The bastards are so money-hungry they would throw the entirity of America down the drain for $10, and their support goes, and always has, to the very top. What a sleazy profession.
What a perfectly appropriate term for these 'neo' 'Chicago Mafia' allies.
Ken Starr is just a weirdo.
His demeanor is not that of a
man who is confident in his skin.
He is all about process.
Not buying. Lawyers who defend mafia figures shouldn’t be above having their motives questioned. Mob lawyers who go on to work in the Justice Department particularly merit scrutiny.
And the same would be true of Al Qaeda lawyers, and lawyers who have dedicated themselves to closing Guantanamo, and springing terrorists in general (was not Holder involved in getting pardons for Puerto Rican terrorists?), and going after CIA officers, and going after Bush and Cheney too. If they have frankly placed themselves on the side of the enemy in case after case, they may not want their motives questioned but as it happens, I do question their intent and their ideology and their ability to see past their own political blinders.
I frankly don’t want these people in high office. I frankly don’t want them prosecuting American citizens. I don’t trust them to have access to classified information, which they will have if they now start prosecuting Al Qaeda and, if they get their wish, CIA too. I don’t think any of us should have to apologize for distrusting the people who got terrorists sprung from jail when you know that some of these same people have returned to the fight.
Thanks Onyx. A very key distinction between these ‘gop’ lawyers and the GOP. I stand corrected.
Plus it’s hard to find a good disinfectant when you’re out to sea...
