Thune: GOP preparing to slow or block health bill in Senate debate
The Hill ^ | March 3, 2010 | Michael O'Brien

Republicans are preparing to raise points of order and other roadblocks to the healthcare bill, a member of the Senate GOP leadership said Tuesday evening.

Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), the fourth-ranking Senate Republican who serves as chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, said the GOP is prepared for a number of scenarios in which they would seek to slow down or halt passage of healthcare legislation once it comes back before the Senate.

"I still think it creates a lot of problems when it comes back to the Senate because there will be lots of points of order that will lie against the bill in the Senate, and obviously, we will, hopefully, have the opportunity to raise some of those," Thune said of the health bill during an appearance on Fox News.

At issue is the new bill of healthcare legislation changes the House is expected to pass under budget reconciliation rules. Under those rules, the legislation only has to achieve a simple majority in the Senate instead of the 60 normally needed to end a filibuster. Such a maneuver would effectively sidestep Republican opposition to the health bill.

"You know, I don't want to concede that it's going to pass for sure yet," Thune said. "I still think that there's a lot of clock left in this game."

Republicans have fewer procedural options under reconciliation rules, which limits debate and is designed to eventually force votes on a piece of legislation. The GOP might object, though, for instance, to whether the new legislation is germane to the budget. These points are decided by the Senate parliamentarian, but could be overruled by the president of the Senate.

"I think we have to be prepared for all types of different scenarios and sort of game this out," Thune explained. "I mean, our goal at the end is to stop a really bad bill from passing."

"So my guess is, before this is all said and done, that if they want to pass it, they may be able to pass it, but we're going to do everything we can on the side of the American people to try and stop a really bad bill from passing," the South Dakota senator added.

So in the end the Republicans will cave, as always...Not surprising.

TRI CARE FOR LIFE This from a google search:

http://economicspolitics.blogspot.com/2009/05/tricare-for-life-is-obama-trying-to.html

This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollee’s cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.) http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/99xx/doc9925/12-18-HealthOptions.pdf

Tricare fee increases imposed last week by the Defense Department will be repealed by a provision of the compromise 2010 defense authorization bill unveiled Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators.
Snip The fee increases were announced on Sept. 30 and took effect on Oct. 1, but the defense bill, HR 2647, includes a provision barring any fee increases until the start of fiscal 2011.

Snip

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services, said the announcement of fee increases was shocking considering that the Obama administration promised earlier this year to hold off on any new fee Tricare fee increases until fiscal 2011.

“President Obama and DoD assured NAUS and the entire military family earlier this year that there would rightly be no increases in any Tricare fees” in fiscal 2010, Matz said. “We took them at their word, and I can’t believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward,” he added.

It is going to take prayer, plain and simple, things that seem impossible for us are not with God. These people are radicals and their plan is not healthcare, they don't really care about people that have no insurance, this is all special interest group (unions and other radical groups)pacification. It is about power and greed. They don't care what we say, they don't care that they are doing wrong against us. They don't care that at one time this nation was blessed above all others by God because we were a God fearing nation, they only see their own greed and power. They hate our constitution and do not fear our God. Well I have news for them, there is nothing more POWERFUL than a praying people and our God promises us that in His Word:

2 Chronicles 7:14 and my people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Remember this--For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him whom we have to do. Hebrews 4:12-13

In other words, time to pray and believe that God will help us in our time of need, He sees all that is going on and is waiting for His people to speak up and to pray to Him. Obviously THIS government is not going to listen to the people, this is a government that wants control over us and our lives. Well I am sorry but Jesus died on the cross so we could be a FREE people, ONLY HE controls me, not man. We can complain and shout all we want, but we need God to have victory--let us not leave Him out--that is how we got into this mess in the first place!

If the House passes the Senate version, it becomes Law (after the President signs it) and what the Senate does or doesn't do is irrelevant.

This is an issue for the House, not the Senate.

Your post is exactly correct!

If the Bill reaches the Senate for Reconciliation, it has passed the House and would become Law, and that is the Democrats REAL goal.

We need to call. Shut down the Capital switchboard. I have been calling all day. We need to keep the pressure on. This dirtbag must be stopped.

They don't give a damn about phone calls or peaceful protests.

One problem with this, as I understand it. The first step in this reconciliation process, is for the House to pass the Senate bill.

So even if the reconciliation process is blocked, Bambi still has the Senate bill, passed by both chambers, that he can sign into law. Yes? No?

At issue is the new bill of healthcare legislation changes the House is expected to pass under budget reconciliation rules.

I don't understand what has happened.

Is this the same bill that was passed in the Senate? Are they supposed to be reconciling the House and Senate versions of the bill?

What about the "new changes" that Obama added after last week's meeting? Is that in the bill? Wouldn't that make it a new bill requiring new votes in the House and Senate?

Or are they using a budget reconciliation process to vote on a new bill, discarding the old bill?

Where are we now? I've lost track of things.

As I understand it, the House passed their version of a health care bill, and the Senate passed a different version of a health care bill. The House has to pass the Senate’s version first, and then they will try to “reconcile” the bills. At this point, Obama can’t sign anything, because the House and the Senate must ultimately pass identical bills, which they have not done yet.

Right, but once the House passes the Senate version, in order to proceed with reconciliation, then both would have passed the same bill, the Senate bill.

Yes, but the House hasn’t passed the Senate’s version, yet. I think we’re both saying the same thing. LOL!

Well, natch, but you can fix that pronto with your spam filter. They sent my letter, untouched and unedited, to six newspapers --- and the newspapers themselves require the info you speak of (address, phone, etc) for verification purposes.

So -- as I said before--- it works beautifully for me. And my FILTER works beautifully to weed out Obamunist spam!
