The Guardian, UCSDs student newspaper, has printed a statement that it says was written by the student who hung a noose in the campus library last week.
The student who remains anonymous claims that last Tuesday, two days before the noose was found, a friend of hers fashioned it from a piece of rope she had found on the ground, without thinking of any of its connotations or the current racial climate at UCSD. She herself then carried the noose with her to the library and ended up hanging it at my desk. It was, she says, a mindless act and stupid mistake. When she left the library hours later, I simply forgot about it.
The student says that she didnt learn of the nooses discovery until Friday morning. Ashamed and embarrassed, she called campus police and confessed. As a minority student who sympathizes with the students that have been affected by recent issues on campus, she writes, I am distraught to know that I have unintentionally added to their pain.
An editors note at the end of her statement says that the paper has verified the authors authenticity.
The full text of the statement, which at this writing is only available in PDF form at the papers website, appears below.
I have a story that needs to be heard. I am the girl youve read about, the one who hung the noose in Geisel Library.
Firstly, Im writing to apologize. I dont have an excuse for what I did, and I deeply regret it.
Secondly, Im writing to hopefully put a little bit of faith back into the UCSD campus by clarifying that it was not an act of racism. This is what happened.
I found a small piece of rope on the ground earlier in the day. While I was hanging out with my friends a bit later, we tried jump- roping with it and making it into a lasso. My friend then took the rope and tied it into a noose. I innocently marveled at his ability to tie a noose, without thinking of any of its connotations or the current racial climate at UCSD. I left soon after with one of my friends for Geisel to study, still carrying the rope. After a bit of studying I picked up the rope to play with, and ended up hanging it by my desk. It was a mindless act and stupid mistake. When I got up to leave, a couple hours later, I simply forgot about it. This was Tuesday night. Three days later, on Friday morning, I found out that the noose had been found and construed as another racist act on campus. I felt so ashamed and embarrassed, and the first thing I did was call the campus police and confess. I was hoping to clarify that this was not an act of racism before the incident got a full reaction from the campus. I gave my statement around 9 a.m. They thanked me for coming forward and for trying to clear up the issue. Later, I received a campuswide e-mail saying that I confessed and had been taken into custody, which simply wasnt true. One thing that is true is that I have been suspended. I know what I did was offensive regardless of my intentions I am just trying to say Im sorry. As a minority student who sympathizes with the students that have been affected by the recent issues on campus, I am distraught to know that I have unintentionally added to their pain.
What a shock. It was put up by a minority student - a fact buried at the end. Which makes the entire labored explanation highly suspect.
Translation: I left Tuesday and immediately called attention to the noose to create a racial stink. But some dang survelliance camera in the library caught me in the act, so the campus cops tracked me down and confronted me.
Do you know anyone who ties nooses? I don’t.
Nor would I play with one or hang it on my study carrel.
Sorry I do not buy this.
And didn’t everyone here know very well who hung that noose.
Exactly
She took lessons from the black Professor at Columbia who hung a noose on his own door and then cried racism
Not necessarily an “aggrieved” minority, though. Lots of Asians in the UC system.
Also note that she is now suspended. Over a piece of rope. Ridiculous.
Sorry, but there is a long and sordid history of 'aggrieved' minorities pulling stunts like this. Had it been Asian, the media release would have mentioned the specific ethnicity instead of burying it.
Exactly. Those cameras must be racist because they make it so hard to keep the race hustle going.
And UCSD is trying to let the truth dribble out slowly to reduce the impact.
“I’m sorry I got caught staging a fake event...”
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
Great - once again there is a racist witch hunt against the whites on campus started by a minority.
She should be apologizing to the white students on campus.
I used to hear passing references to “racial issues” in e-mails and such when I was in college, and I never knew what the heck they were talking about. I think, maybe, there was a swastika stapled to a telephone pole in town at one point, or something. But from the serious tone, you’d think there were regular cross-burnings on Saturday evenings.
I bet it’s the case that the “current racial climate” is always negative, according to libs (who, of course, run universities). So that whenever any random symbols pop up, they aren’t isolated incidents. Oh, no. They’re part of a Pattern. If there was no Pattern, people might just stop listening when they complain on behalf of exploitable minorities.
Classic!!! Japanese camera accused of being racist for not detecting asian eyes properly!!! You can't make this stuff up!
Better than being suspended by the piece of rope.
To being a horse thief?
