WASHINGTON, Feb. 27, 2010 The commander of Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific ordered the return of Pearl Harbor-based ships that sortied today.
USS Crommelin, USS O'Kane, USS Chafee and USS Chung-Hoon departed Pearl Harbor this morning in response to a tsunami warning for the Hawaii Islands issued in the wake of an 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Chile today. No injuries or damage have been reported in Hawaii.
Access will be restored to previously evacuated areas. The Ford Island Bridge in Hawaii has reopened, and the Fleet and Family Support Center has stood down its family assistance center. Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai is returning to normal operations, also reported no injuries or damage related to the tsunami warning.
The U.S. 3rd Fleet also took precautionary measures by advising able San Diego ships to get underway and to take station in the Southern California operating area.
(Based on U.S. Navy news releases.)
Wife and I toured Pearl Harbor this past week. Saw the Mighty Missouri, the Arizona Memorial and the submarine Bowfin.
I didn’t realize the Arizona was giving up quite so much heavy oil.
The crowd was older Americans and very young Japanese.
The setup sure seemed right. And S. American quakes have caused tsunamis on the Big Island many times.
I’m no scientist, but the small rise of the tsunami when it reached the Hawaiian Islands might have been due to their steep rise from the depths and relatively small profile. Intead of a broad gradual continental shelf to pile up upon, with nowhere else to go, the energy probably took the path of least resistance, around the islands.
Any science profs out there who’d like to grade me on my theory?
;^)
Meanwhile, hundreds of surfer dudes who waited patiently on the beach for “the big one” to arrive are pissed.........
Maybe scientists of today are math impaired. It could be they are politically motivated. They have to ass-kiss politicians to keep money coming in for their own jobs and silly projects. They must make a politician or two look important in order to remain funded.
Who knows why this one didn't live up to expectations. But thank God it didn't.
