The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the West Coast of the United States.
A NWS spokesman on CNN says it is estimated the tsunami waves will be 10 to 15 feet high when they hit Hawaii. The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.
Recent buoy reports of wave heights vary from 5 to 16 feet.

BULLETIN
TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 7
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
148 AM HST SAT FEB 27 2010
TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII
SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT
A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.
SNIP
EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010
The NWS has also issued a tsunami warning for most of the Pacific region:
TSUNAMI BULLETIN NUMBER 006

Here is a local report on the West Coast tsunami advisory:
A tsunami advisory has been issued for the California coast, including Del Norte County, following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the central coast of Chile at 10:34 p.m. PST Friday.
The forecasted arrival time for Crescent City is 1:46 p.m. PST Saturday, however tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says.
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA... WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

Sirens going off live on KGMB
You might want to literally consider moving. Seriously. This is getting scary. Stay safe and watch the animals for warning.
I'm only in trouble if the New Madrid fault goes bonkers (BTW, there was an earth quake in Illinois a few weeks ago) and the Great Lakes start jumping out of their "bowls."

I have been watching this Kona cam for over an hour now, looks like an increase in wave activity.
FOX is showing some Hawaii web cam shots from time to time.
This was supposed to be a lightly effected area.
The next update should be interesting
yes, but they are almost 6 feet below the high water mark of the most recent high tide ... the timing is everything, just like with a hurricane’s storm surge.
New Madrid eh ???
Where the Missisippi went backwards for several miles after an earthquake in early 18 somenthing
KITV is reporting that SoCal just received the first surges of about 2 feet. Say LA should experience in one hour.

Hawaii #tsunami forecasts: Hilo 11:05 a.m. local, 6.9 to 8.2 feet; Honolulu 11:37a.m., 1.6 to 2.3 feet; Kahului 11:26 a.m., 3.6 to 10 feet
I am about 15 miles from Cook Inlet at around 120ft. elevation, I’m not too worried.

A six foot surge is being predicted. That does not sound too significant.
Youre joking, right?
___
No. I just have not heard anyone put a six foot surge in perspective. No comparisons to surges in recent hurricanes, the 2004 Tsunami, etc. Admittedly, I have not been listening in long.
I like how Teh Messiah said that this was a natural event and “we cannot stop it.”
A 6 foot surge flowing into the marinas will rip the moorings big time.
correct. if it stays at 6' this will be fairly insignificant for those not stupid enough to be in the water.
Awesome depiction of the energy wave emanating from Chile quake!
“I like how Teh Messiah said that this was a natural event and we cannot stop it.”
He has the same opinion of Communism, it seems.
Tide increasing again at La Jolla.
Yeah, that one....the fault runs all the way up to Minnesota I believe, at least as far as the Mississippi goes.
