The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the West Coast of the United States.
A NWS spokesman on CNN says it is estimated the tsunami waves will be 10 to 15 feet high when they hit Hawaii. The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.
Recent buoy reports of wave heights vary from 5 to 16 feet.
Latest statement on Hawaii:
BULLETIN
TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 7
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
148 AM HST SAT FEB 27 2010
TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII
SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT
A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.
SNIP
EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010
The NWS has also issued a tsunami warning for most of the Pacific region:

Here is a local report on the West Coast tsunami advisory:
A tsunami advisory has been issued for the California coast, including Del Norte County, following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the central coast of Chile at 10:34 p.m. PST Friday.
The forecasted arrival time for Crescent City is 1:46 p.m. PST Saturday, however tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says.
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA... WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

Do they not have a Fox affiliate or anything?
Hawaii is a state in the US where nothing bad has happened yet, but the best coverage FoxNews can muster is a webcam from the roof of a hotel and somebody on a cellphone.
It's going to kill me, but I may have to switch to CNN.
Book ‘em Dan-o!
You can't fix stupid, except when they win a Darwin award, then they can't reproduce (anymore).
A WEAK tsunami has hit French Polynesia but there's no major damage, as road traffic in areas close to the sea was suspended in a tsunami alert following the quake in Chile.
Huge waves struck the Gambier archipelago at 6:30am local time (3:30am AEDT Sunday), the high commissioner's office in Papeete said, as the tsunami raced across the Pacific.
The Marquise islands, northeast of Polynesia, were hit between 7am and 8am by a series of two-metre waves which damaged some boats, but no one was hurt, officials said.
Between the waves the sea withdrew around 15 metres, causing rip currents.
Dunno ... depends on their instrumentation but I’m guessing they have photo capability that is sharable, unlike the other national assets likely trained on the area.
That's amazing. FReepers are everywhere.
Ok, I just got the video. What he said was, on behalf of the American people, Michelle and I send our deepest condolences. That’s proper.
And then, he split an infinitive.
Should be nearing La Jolla?
Why no wave at Easter Island? Tonga? Samoa. There is no wave.
If you think that’s bad, the weather channel was covering Gov. Lingle’s presser via Skype.
Hawaii is a US state, not some atoll with 25 residents.

Just got a hold of her. She got woke up by the patrols at 6:30am. Apparently nobody believed them till the patrol “started getting serious”, her words but didn’t elaborate. So they got camp packed up and are currently driving in their jeep to higher ground.
About an hour and 10 min before the first wave
“Should be nearing La Jolla?”
