I know you must be....and I hope, since they have had lots of warning, that the authorities will do all the right things to help people stay safe.
No not real far out. The sea will rise. As it gets closer to shore and as the water gets shallower the wave intensifies in speed and height. There are many buoys that will send info though.
Praying for the LOST cast and all of Hawaii.

Just received a call from daughter who lives in Ecuador. She and family and a visiting grandson were on Ecuador coast for vacation and last night they were told to go back home inland.
KITV is reporting that they are doing the same thing in the low lying areas on Maui
Heard from son’s friend’s mom. As of early this morning, the boys are safe at a hotel.

My brother lives two blocks from Waikiki Beach (on Ala Wai Blvd.), and I’m on Gmail video chat with him right now. He has the local news station playing on his TV, and I’m listening along with him. I doubt the waves or water will reach his ground floor apartment, but who knows? Hopefully there are plenty of sandbags at the ready.
Actually, I am finding that the live news streams are much better and clearer, not to mention bigger.

In looking at the Pacific topology, it appears that so far the tsunami has been traveling across a plain.
My question is, as it encounters shallower water on it’s approach to the Hawaiian Islands, will the magnitude of the waves/damage increase?

They will increase. All boats have been ordered out of the state harbours. Once far enough out they may not even feel the rise. I saw a show on Nat Geo awhile back explaining it.
