The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the West Coast of the United States.
A NWS spokesman on CNN says it is estimated the tsunami waves will be 10 to 15 feet high when they hit Hawaii. The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.
Recent buoy reports of wave heights vary from 5 to 16 feet.
Latest statement on Hawaii:
BULLETIN
TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 7
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
148 AM HST SAT FEB 27 2010
TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII
SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT
A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.
SNIP
EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010
The NWS has also issued a tsunami warning for most of the Pacific region:
TSUNAMI BULLETIN NUMBER 006
PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER/NOAA/NWS
ISSUED AT 1147Z 27 FEB 2010
Here is a local report on the West Coast tsunami advisory:
A tsunami advisory has been issued for the California coast, including Del Norte County, following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the central coast of Chile at 10:34 p.m. PST Friday.
The forecasted arrival time for Crescent City is 1:46 p.m. PST Saturday, however tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says.
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA... WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

There are several on CNN online.
This is a web camera on top of the Hilo bay Tsunami center. Hilo gets pounded by Tsunamis historically.
You may have to download a tool to be able to view the camera images.

No. Wave propagation causes waves to affectively bend. Look at the damage done on the West coast of Sri Lanka.
Warnings at 6 am, tsunami HITS AT 11:19 am. See post #75, for example.
It is probably a list of the most recent stories, so it is left over from last night. After all it is still about 5 AM there right now.
I saw Vancouver Island, BC was on the list of warning sites. I wonder if Vancouver (city) is protected from the Pacific by the island, or it the Olympics are going to get very interesting in the next few hours.
Yep, Called family already, dad is on the phone now with Auntie who is on the SE side of Kauai. Its not yet dawn in Hawaii.
I saw some examples of that...amazing.
Because of the shape of the North American continent and the epicenter of the Tsunami, the pacific North west is not in great danger, but all coastal areas should be on alert. This is a global sized wave and will bounce back and forth across the pacific for HOURS. Hopefully as small waves. (fingers crossed and prayers up)
there was a 2.5 quake on Kodiak at about that time...
2.5?
That won’t wake the dogs up!
Along the Aleutians they get quakes every hour, fortunately the building codes are very strict.
My little grands live in Ewa Beach. I’m calling them in a few to see what my ex dil is going to do.
Dittos! Prayers!!!!!
“Jack! Surfs Up! Grab your board!”
I wonder how many helocopters are being charted to drop off the hardcore surfers with their boards in front of the big waves?
There is some breaking news that LA will get a 2.5 tsunami, its not confirmed but it may coincide with high tide...and a full moon.
Potentially damaging.
“I got up swearing because of a little more snow overnight. Ill take the snow and you guys get to high ground, help will be on the way.”
We woke up to another/more heavy rain like yesterday.
Like you, our so called miseries are minimal.
Here is the simulation for anybody unfamiliar with quakes and resulting tsunamis. This is a simulation of the huge quake that hit Chile in 1960...and shows wave action. Only about 20 second clip but very instructive.
This is serious stuff and prayers up to people in Chile, and all across the Pacific. Hawaii has decent high ground, but those Micro Islands are really at risk.
Looks like huge damages but for people alot of warning time as will hit Hawaii around 3 30 EST.
