The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the West Coast of the United States.
A NWS spokesman on CNN says it is estimated the tsunami waves will be 10 to 15 feet high when they hit Hawaii. The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.
Recent buoy reports of wave heights vary from 5 to 16 feet.

BULLETIN
TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 7
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
148 AM HST SAT FEB 27 2010
TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII
SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT
A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.
SNIP
EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010
The NWS has also issued a tsunami warning for most of the Pacific region:

Here is a local report on the West Coast tsunami advisory:
A tsunami advisory has been issued for the California coast, including Del Norte County, following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the central coast of Chile at 10:34 p.m. PST Friday.
The forecasted arrival time for Crescent City is 1:46 p.m. PST Saturday, however tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says.
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA... WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

Got the impression that it is far from over, am I wrong?
It does look like Hawaii got lucky.
Warning may be cancelled in an hour.
That’s good!
The news media will be devastated.
KHON is watching the water go up and down using a small reef nearby.

I’m not trying to be a smart ass, but I live around these parts, and there’s a thick layer of sea ice right now in all those locations... so does the ice come up, crack, and water spill up from under and thenover? THAT would be something to see.
If anyone knows, post me.
Looks like the Darwin award candidate got luck.
Now the scientists will have some data to study
“Where is Rick Cantore, the Harbinger of Doom?”
In Vancouver, ruining the weather at the Olympics.
Big disappointment for The One, who was hoping to have attention drawn away from his effort to ram his health noncare legislation through Congress starting Monday. Disaster in Hawaii would have served him nicely.
Was Geraldo in charge of this Sunami?
Not good.
I don’t think this is over yet.
Hope when the next major Tsunami threat does not get waved off(so too speak) because of today’s Tsunami light impact on Hawaii(as of time of this post). Worry about things like that.
Well, at least something to manipulate.
I wonder how other countries will come out of this, its possible that tsunami in other directions could be worse
Good point- someone just tweeted this is the Balloon Boy of tsunamis..
The people in the Fox livestream do look bored.
