Wow- the woman being interviewed in Chile is saying the Juan Fernandez islands were covered by water.

A big one like this one in Chile on the New Madrid would absolutely obliterate Memphis and St. Louis

Fortunately the New Madrid Seismic Zone is physically incapable of generating an 8.8 magnitude earthquake.

Most recent studies seem to indicate the NMSZ may be dying out, though have not gotten much media attention.

He says he doesn’t know how big the waves will be, but he expects them to be the largest to hit Hawaii since 1964.

Some serious logistics problems here, getting everybody up and... where? The airports are going to be crazy.

Depressing, isn’t it? I’ve never understood why they don’t cover natural events/disasters more thoroughly. CNN is excellent for this kind of situation.

Having to watch cnn, too. Ick.

Tell me about it. What is it about FOX? Why do they continue their regular programming during something like this? Don't they know that NOBODY cares right now about whatever idiotic interview they have showing?

Come on FOX...get your live-breaking news section together...you're pathetic.

YEs- she seemed to imply that- the government hasn’t used the word tsunami- just called it a wave. I guess there’s enough panic.

Any word on New Zealand? Looks like they are in the direct path of a tsunami too.

The earthquake that caused the 1960 tsunami occurred off the west coast of South America and had a magnitude between 8.25 and 8.5. The waves reached the Hawaiian Islands in about 15 hours. This tsunami caused little damage elsewhere in the islands, but the Hilo Bay area was hard hit. 61 people lost their lives and about 540 homes and businesses were destroyed or severely damaged. The wave heights in Hilo Bay reached 35 feet, compared to only 3-17 feet elsewhere. The water washed far inland through the entire present downtown area.

ChileQuake National Warning: Tsunami Threat to NZ Update 7

03:15HRSNZDT
28 Feb2010

Tsunami update

Confirmation has been received that a tsunami was generated from the 8.8magnitude quake in Chile. A wave measuring 2.34 metres was measured in Talcahuano, Chile.

The first wave to arrive in New Zealand will be in the areas around Chatham Islands (Waitangi) at approximately 0705 NZDT, Sunday 28 February 2010. The first wave may arrive later and may not be the largest. Strong currents and unusual tidal effects may continue for several hours.

Scientific advice is that a marine threat (i.e. threat to beach and small boats corresponding to wave heights less than 1 metre) exists for the entire east coasts of the North and South Islands from Puysegur around to Cape Reinga and extending south to Ahipara. Some land threat also exists with expected wave heights between 1 and 3 metres for the Chatham Islands and Banks Peninsula. There may be some observable sea level changes on parts of the west coast of both the north and south islands.

Wave height refers to maximum water level relevant to the normal sea level at the beach. This does not take tides into account. Based on historical events it is expected that the greatest wave heights will occur between 6 and 12 hours after the initial arrivals.

The National Crisis Management Centre in Wellington has been activated. The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) and scientific advisors are closely monitoring the situation.

People in coastal areas should:

Stay off beaches
Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)
Share this information with family, neighbours and friends
Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates
Follow instructions of your local Civil Defence authorities

Please do not go sightseeing

Yes, compare the reporting of Haiti, CNN by far exceeded Fox in that situation.

The only time they report is when they can get Geraldo to ham it up, but no serious reporting. Shame.

No kidding. I tuned in to see if they had any information, and we’re now going to the money shows.

CNN is actually covering it, though.
