It’s interesting to note that there was a 7.1 magnitude quake yesterday off of Japan, and now this one in Chile. Two different edges of the Pacific Ring of Fire, and opposite sides of the Pacific tectonic plate(s).

Lots is still unknown about the relatively new science of plate tectonics, but I have read in several places over the years that postulate if you have a powerful earthquake on one side of a tectonic plate, the vibrations can help set of other quakes in areas that are far removed but adjacent to that plate. It’s like hitting a cymbal; the vibrations carry to the whole platter if you hit one small spot; and when the vibration from a large quake hits another fault line or subduction zone, it can trigger a slip in that spot too.

The forces involved here are just enormous, and take decades if not centuries of stress to build up and mere seconds to unleash. I’ll be very interested to see how much land displacement took place in Chile once the sun is up and we get a good look at the damage.

Speaking of magnitude, for anyone else whose curiosity bump was itching...

Q: What are the different magnitude scales, and why are there so many?

:)

That’s OK! We had a small one near here recently and I felt nothing. On the other hand, my wife and my father in law did. The cats went crazy.

Those pictures are all from Santiago, which is more than 200 miles away, correct?

All I can say is WOW. Prayers up to all Chileans, and the rest of the world that will be affected later today if the tsunamis hit.

We get them here in about 12 hours. 11 30 a.m. or so local time. That will be our turn. And on top of the 7.5 or so earthquake YESTERDAY here in Japan, this is making for a most unusual weekend. ;-)

Well, Tokyo won't get hit persay being inland and on a bay (except for some islands off shore that are technically in Tokyo Metropolitan area), but coastal areas up and down Japan's east coast should get some good surf and the people will have had plenty of time. I wonder how small those waves will get when we get our fair share here in Japan.

based on what I am hearing on CNN, I have been pronouncing Chile incorrectly my whole life.

I have just the same pronunciation as the yummy food.

I like the different emphasis in the correct pronunciation, which I am guessing it is.

Wonder how “the one” pronounces it?

For every increasing number in an earthquake the energy generated is 32 times greater. So an 8 earthquake is 64 times stronger than a 6 point earthquake.

You're doing the math wrong - it's not 32 plus 32; it's 32 TIMES 32. So an 8 is roughly 1,000 times stronger than a 6.

One of the “experts” on CNN, about an hour ago, said that this earthquake is 800 times stronger than the one that hit Haiti last month.

I had the Boob Tube on until 11:45 — I was viewing the olympics. This quake sounds like breaking news but nbc wouldn’t take a chance that someone might tune out so they told noone. No text crawl, nothing, nada. Selfish boobs.

Well, yeah! Because that's how it's pronounced.

In Spanish. Giving it the Spanish pronunciation while speaking in English, though, is affectation and we know that Obama has plenty of that.
