They’re having trouble reaching the southern part of the country - and they’re not inflating their numbers the way Haiti did.

Earthquakes have been responsible for the destruction of whole societies, and the potential worst case scenario in an earthquake dwarfs the most violent, long lived tornado.

Completely agreed - most people just don't understand geologic timescales...

1556 - China - 830,000 dead; 1976 - China - 242,000 dead; etc., etc.

The thing about a majority of the quakes we have had in San Diego, by the time you realize what it is, it is over. We have never really had any centered here but we feel the rock and roll of the ones out in the desert areas and a month or 2 ago we felt the rockers they had south of the border out by Tecate and south of there. I have never been through a tornado and I never want to be, hurricanes either. I'll stay here in earthquake country and be happy. Now I come from Buffalo NY originally and I'm sick of snow too so I ended up in the perfect place for me. It's raining today but the clouds have been really weird. Dare I say it feels like earthquake weather

What I’ve noticed in OC is how “quiet” the air is.....not tornado dead quiet...but ....”quiet”.

Surely you recognize the different standards that apply to our feckless leader and his predecessor?

&&&&

But of course! However, as relentless as the tides, soon he and his comrades in the media will be the only ones who think he is ‘special’. Everyone else in the world will realize that he is all talk and no action.

It wasn’t nearly as bad as the “experts” were predicting and that’s a GOOD thing.

&&&&

If it had been as severe as they were expecting in Hawaii, the islands that they totally ignored in their reporting would have been really seriously affected - the low lying Tuamotus, and some of the Marquesas. But since they are not American, I guess they don’t even rate a mention on CNN or Fox or the Weather Channel!

I am so thankful that it did not materialize the way CNN wanted to see!

Dude....you don't have sense to get in a shelter when you hear the warning? Today's weather Doppler warnings etc, alert radios etc, very rare that a person is killed by a tornado unless they did not heed the warning and stayed in the trailer park.

I like my trailer, I will not abandon it!

Not sure what effect this will have at the grocery store. we get a lot of fresh stuff from chile..

For about 12 years I worked for a company that fumigated Chilean fruit upon arrival in the port of Los Angeles and San Diego. It was amazing how many grapes, peaches, plums and nectarines would come off of one reefer ship. After a looking at it all for so long I couldn't eat fruit for a long time, I was sick of it.

Far more people have been killed worldwide in EQs than in tornadoes.

Not what I said. I said the in the U.S.

Floods, tornadoes and hurricanes kill *many* more every year in the U.S. than earthquakes.

In fact I believe tornadoes alone kill more every year in the U.S. than earthquakes.

Woman on Chile TV, saying she wants to sue the builders of her apartment building,

And so it begins. Look at what the world learned from Katrina.

Everyone else in the world will realize that he is all talk and no action.

Pretty sure that he's no talk as well as no action!

Ever seen him without a script or teleprompter? Sounds like a stutterer with a mouth full of marbles. And they tell us that clown is intelligent. Ha!

Yes! For having a minor rainstorm it is really quiet.

He had to read his remarks of concern about speaking to the President of Chile today! The man is a zombie, controlled by others.

I'm certain they do. Floods kill more still. But a large earthquake has the potential to kill more Americans in a single event than have been killed by tornadoes in the history of the world.

file note: Dr. Gerard Fryer, of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, NOAA, is the name of the official in Hawaii who can be attributed to the ‘we dodged a bullet’ comment

seems kinda strange in a way to look at a 5.7 and call it an aftershock
