Host vs. Host: Limbaugh, Levin Pummel Beck
The Atlantic Wire ^ | 02/24/10 | Jake Simpson

Virtually unknown a year ago, Glenn Beck has rapidly risen to the top of the right-wing punditocracy. Witness his keynote address at CPAC, where the Fox News titan assailed Republicans and Democrats alike and called for a return to bedrock conservative values. Though conservatives bloggers were nonplussed by Beck's attacks on the right, most praised at least some elements of his speech.

beck is not saying that all repubs and dems are alike.

Yes he is saying that! That is the problem! And don't even get me started about how he is glad Obama won.

At the risk of getting flamed, I thought the speech at CPAC, given by Beck was great....and I especially tuned in Monday to see what Rush had to say about it....especially since Beck is almost idolizing in his remarks about Rush....but not a word was said...now, I think Rush is “big enough” to be a bit gracious and could have mentioned the great speech...and lets face it, there were other comments given in that speech besides letting the Republicans have it....which , by the way, was well deserved, in my opinion. And I've said that for ages....we're not in the mess we're in NOW, only because of the thugs running the show how...it's been decades coming, thanks to BOTH PARTIES. Do I applaud the few Republicans who have a spine and are standing up against the terrible stuff coming out of Washington....you bet I do....but I sure think the spineless, sometimes turncoat , “mum is the word” so called Repubs who sit by and won't show their face or answer questions should be taken to task.

I wonder what the critics of Beck would have said had he gone out there and sang the praises of the Republican Party...give me a break.

And by the way , I've voted Republican for years, and I'll tell you I'm still registered Repub.but if I lived in a state where you didn't have to be registered R. or D. to vote in the primaries...I'd be Independent. I think Beck said what had to be said.....do I think a 3rd party is the answer....NO...but the fat cat suited boys in the Republican Party need to wake up and face the music...they will not regain the Congress OR the White House by running the same “good old boys” as usual...

I like Beck, and I’m watching his show now. But he makes it seem like he’s the first conservative to rail against spending by both parties. I’ve listened to many conservative talk show hosts, and ALL OF THEM!!! have heavily criticized overspending by both parties. Now Beck does his shtick very well, and he deserves to be praised for it. But he’s hardly the first. Rush had done it longer and better than anyone. And as much as he’s criticized on this forum, Hannity has done it for a long time too.

You don’t have much choice but to oppose all political campaigns who have any chance of winning. I intend to stay within the framework of the Republican party and work to get the best elected officials as possible. You do realize that politicians spend money because the people demand it, right? Maybe you and I don’t but most people expect something from the government. You’ll never elect the person you (and I)truly desire until the electorate is willing to give up their “perks”.

The Tea Party crowd is arguing for that but I’ll bet you a dollar to a doughnut that a tea party acceptable candidate will lose some of them when the candidate announces they want to get rid of perk near and dear to them. Think farm program, social security, mortgage deduction, medicare, medicaid, earned income tax credit, add some of your own, etc. You see, the perfect constitutional candidate would advocate eliminating all of those things. Anyone doing less should be labeled a “progressive” by you all, if consistency means anything.

Beck has an ego that is bigger than O’Rielly’s ego.

That will be his downfall.

Just one example, the TEA party rally on 9/12 was about Glen Beck’s 9/12 organization. According to Beck, that was the reason it was so big.

Difference between Beck’s position and Limbaugh (et all)’s position as I see it:

Limbaugh: We need to get the democrats out of power and then work to make the republicans act like conservatives. Removing the democrats is the number one priority.

Beck: When the republicans have been in power they haven’t acted like conservatives in 22 years. We need to elect conservatives and not just hold our noses and vote for the lesser of two evils. If we put the same people in power that were in power from 2001-2007 we are doomed.

I’m not sure how closely you watch the economic data, but at this point it won’t matter whether the eventual strangulation comes 5 years sooner or later. Our deficit has nearly hit Greek levels, so political participation is not the first item on my list of priorities.

What interests me is how many people think that the eventuality can be postponed indefinitely, rather than only temporarily, by re-electing people who contributed to the problem in the first place. I could understand that mindset 10 or 20 years ago. But with the economic sirens wailing, it’s pretty funny to see people who are pragmatic in their personal finances accept drunken spenders handling the nation’s. And that what Republicans are: drunks, instead of Democrat glue-sniffers.

But don’t let me ruin your enjoyment of the meaningless political farce that will take place this year. Happiness should be welcomed at this desperate point in time, no matter how obtained, I guess. The future is bleak so go for the gusto. And, peace.

You are on a totally different subject...talking about candidates and politicians.

I was talking about all these arguments...gossip about talk show hosts.

I don't pick my candidates due to the "R", but that is where I start looking.

You try to be a conservative elite and that's fine, but exactly what good have you accomplished fomenting arguments among allies?

In my old occupation I would accuse you of aiming at the wrong targets. We have to stop the libs before we start turning on our own.

The question remains: what has all this bickering (and spreading poxes) accomplished?

Okay, I get it, you give up, there is no hope, the world is coming to an end, the sky is falling. I guess that is the message Beck instills in his followers.

I don’t happen to agree with that mindset.

Beck has 100 times more charisma than Levin.

And that'd be all Beck has.

Do you mean post #49?

In post #26, isn’t ‘them’ referring to the hosts and not the pubbies?

Rush was right to tell people to support McCain in the general election. He was also right telling us not to support McCain in the primary election.

Many Conservatives stayed home or voted third party, giving us Obama and the most aggressive and damaging leap toward outright communism this nation has ever suffered. Another such vote may see us end as a free nation.

Please explain your optimism. What structural defects have responsibly proposed to be fixed?

False or misplaced optimism is one of the beefs that I have with Rush. The it’s-a-great-country-and-therefore-it-will-again faith is only faith, and falls short when there are no concrete reasons for it.

I’ve not been a permanent doomsayer, and actually put cold water on the notion during March 2009 was the end of the world. (In fact, there is still a modicum of slack and finacial gimmicks left that will prolong the inevitable.) However, baby steps that Republicans are poised to make are laughably inadequate; brasher, more radical steps are required.

Because I’m a pragmatist, I agree that Americans are not ready for the cure. But that also explains my pessimism. Essentially they need a 2x4 to their heads. So why should I waste my time with some lame political participation if it has no practical effect?

I love Rush and have listened to him for 20 years, but he is coming off as a smug Republican water carrier. (Which he admitted after the Stimulus was passed.)(Thank you AG)

Beck never “carried the water for the GOP”.(Thank you FF)

When you get past all the yelling and hollering, it all boils down to something quite simple, The GOP water carriers vs. conservative independent thinkers.
