California Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) chairman Ryan Sorba generated a media controversy when he was shown at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) denouncing the organizers for inviting a homosexual Republican group, GOProud, into the event as an official sponsor. In "controversial" remarks, Sorba said homosexuality was unnatural and that he welcomed more debate and discussion about the subject from his political adversaries.
But what many people don't realize is that Sorba's "outburst" was provoked by a speaker who preceded him, Alexander McCobin of Students For Liberty (SFL).
McCobin went out of his way to use valuable time from the podium to thank the American Conservative Union, the main CPAC organizer, for making the controversial decision to approve GOProud's participation.
David Keene, a lobbyist, is the chairman of the ACU and personally approved GOProud's involvement in CPAC.
Sorba told AIM, "I think CPAC went overboard this year. I don't think he [Keene] should be sitting at the top of CPAC." He noted that CPAC over the last several years has also allowed groups such as the ACLU to have exhibits at the event.
"What's next?," Sorba asked. "Are they going to have Republicans for Obamacare? Republicans for free abortions?"
Incredibly, McCobin of SFL told me that his group "is not a conservative organization" and that "We spent this past weekend reaching out to the left and the right at both the Young Democrats of America's convention and the Conservative Political Action Conference. We are not left or right."
If they are not conservative, Sorba asked, "What are they doing at CPAC?"
No stranger to controversy, Sorba is the author of the book, The Born Gay Hoax (this is a working draft) and was shouted down at Smith College by lesbian activists because of his support for traditional values.
Too much editing on my
Any “conservative” fairy tries to recruit my kid and he’s gonna get a LIBERAL dose of buckshot in whichever hole he prefers it.
Nonsense, you are striving to move me, freerepublic, the GOP, and America to the left.
“It depends what your definition of conservative is, religiously conservative or politically conservative”
There are three pillars to conservatism...economic, social, national security.
If a person isn’t all three, they are not conservative. They can self-identify as conservative but that doesn’t make it so.
They may be a good economic conservative...but not A conservative.
That is because it driven by demonic rebellion. Liberals themselves want a Garden without God, and without the laws which the Fall and man’s inherent proclivity to sin make necessary, and so imagine kids do not need real discipline, and that war is never necessary, and want both an Adam and Eve and Adam and Steve running around without clothes.
The way the human “beast” is, unwelcome homosexual come-ons are considered a particularly grave form of sexual harassment. Bandy about the word “homophobia” all you want, that’s the nature of the beast. “Will you be my sex partner” is NOT the egalitarian equivalent of “Will you be my wife/husband.” “Will you date me” doesn’t work the same across the divide either.
Once we have run up against a cold hard Fact about humanity, we can either respect it, or go on a quixotic quest trying to change it.
I should add that someone pushing “gay power”, gay marriage or gay education or gay anti-discrimination laws/special rights would at once find me arguing in the opposite direction. I realize that it is hard to be dispassionate on the subject.
This is still a social conservative site.
I think so and they should be. I am tired of slime pulling their dirty tricks for their own personal agendas.
hook em hawk
Yep, that group tends to ruin a lot of things and are personal agenda driven. The problem ronbots is the rest of America doesn’t want what you are selling.
That is why the gay power group was at CPAC and that is the main reason that freerepublic boycotted it this year, along with Governor Palin.
Yet here you are, carrying their message and their agenda to freerepublic itself and trying to persuade me and the rest of these conservatives to move left to the homosexuals.
“Keene is a money whore willing to promote any group that pays him.”
And why do we put up with it? Why do we allow PROGRESSIVES to take over what is supposed to be a CONSERVATIVE event? Frankly, I even object to the name...American Conservative UNION...imo, the word is usually a red flag.
Personal views are not the issue. Government intrusion is. Whether you are “offended” is not a government issue. If you are really a “conservative”, that should be clear to you from other arenas. I’m talking about consistency.
If it goes as far as that, I don’t mind. It’s when they start to go after conservative social values that irks me.
See post 29. Those who suppose homosexuals can be conservative have a strange idea of what conservatism requires, and those that assume that acceptance of homosexuality will enable even fiscal conservatism and small gov. do not understand its nature and effects.
The effort to get leftward of DADT is one example of trying to be humanity-blind in an undertaking whose success is largely fed by how well it understands the humanity it employs.
No. You’re talking about accepting the homosexual lifestyle.
We don’t have to accept it. They can do what they damn well please, but I as a conservative reject them.
Anybody stupid enough to believe that all they want is tolerance is a fool. They demand acceptance.
They demand special status, they demand long held traditions fall to their radical and minority viewpoints...ie homosexual marriage and repeal of don’t ask, don’t tell.
Rejected.
Not really, How many homosexuals that live as homosexuals do you think are real conservatives, not the little one legged or two legged libertarian types, but real conservatives?
