Looks like a big one got away.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said at a press event this morning that Democrats pitched holding an upcoming Democratic National Convention in Las Vegas, but that the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority didn't "want it."
The authority had other big trade shows booked and couldn't fit the convention into its schedule, Reid said.
National political conventions can be big business: The 2008 Democratic National Convention, held in Denver, drew 84,000 attendees for then-candidate Barack Obama's nomination-acceptance speech.
Reid, who held this morning's event to discuss a jobs bill pending before Congress, made his remarks in response to an audience member who asked why the convention hasn't come to Las Vegas.
Reid prefaced his comments by discussing two separate Las Vegas-related comments by President Obama. Obama told a town-hall audience in Indiana a year ago that companies receiving federal bailouts shouldn't plan junkets to Las Vegas on the taxpayers' dime. And earlier this month, he urged families saving for college to stash their cash instead of visiting Las Vegas.
Reid said this morning that Obama and his entourage "love Nevada."
"We all say things that don't come out right, and he loves Nevada," Reid said. "He came here 22 times during his campaign."
Obama is scheduled to arrive in Las Vegas tonight for a day-long visit. The president's Friday agenda includes a public town-hall session, a meeting with workers at CityCenter and a closed-door session with members of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Vegas didn’t want to lower the IQ of the city.
It’s bad enough when Reid is there.
Note to Reid...it's you they don't want. It'd be wise to save up a few boxes and keep them in your office in DC, or better yet, start shuttling your personal items home...makes it easier when the pink slip arrives. I'd recommend polishing up the resume but everyone already knows you're a doofus, so I hope you saved up your nickles to live on.
Just as well. There's not reason to sully the "Vegas" name with a Democrat convention.
Nothing to do at all with the fact Obama’s told people on four separate occassions NOT to go to Las Vegas. Sure. Nothing at all. The mayor of Las Vegas turned down a meeting with Obama, but hey. None of this is connected at all. All pure coincidence. Nope, just booked up. Even though the hotels there are running 25% vacancies. All booked up, schedule can’t handle it. The mayor of Las Vegas called Obama a ‘slow learner’ for repeatedly slamming Las Vegas. Nope, nothing to see here, folks. Move along. Believe us in the objective, unbiased mainstream ‘media’.
What? The hookers didn’t want the competition?
Harry Reid is proof that the biggest whores in Nevada aren’t in the brothels.
Las Vegas prolly wanted paying customers.
Mayor of Vegas will be “too busy” to attend when Zer0 shows up tonight and tomorrow.
If Reid is caught lying about this, his political career just jumped the shark.
Las Vegas Mayor to WH;
...”I’ve got other things to do quite frankly for my constituents here in Las Vegas who rely on me to do the right thing as a mayor,” explained Mayor Goodman

BUULLLL DROPPINGS
I will bet that Las Vegas didn’t want them because they are whiney and cheap!
When I was younger, I lived in Hilton Head, SC. The Family Circle Women’s Tennis and the MCI Heritage Golf Tournament were always back to back. Those of us who worked Food and Beverage used to hate the tennis people as cheap as could be, now the golfers, OMG, they were great!!! Drank and ate like it was their job!! Great tippers too!
Too wild with too much drug use and risky behaviour no doubt. No sense bringing the reputation of the city down.
Bwah,ha,ha! Las Vegas didn’t want a convention! All those RAT sleazebags running around would make Vegas look bad.
Don’t most cities have to bid on these political conventions? I’m sure many cities figure the security
costs make it a loser. Particularly when a bunch of
cheap skates are involved.
lived in Hilton Head for a year, worked hard, and had fun.
Its not that. Its just that the hookers have high standards.
For the most part, Las Vegas likes being non-political.
And LV hates any kind of demonstration or rally.
Can you imagine the amount of damage done by the gangs that show up at these conventions. The convention center and the hotels on the strip are designed for accessabilty-not containing crowds. You can block off the streets, but everybody will just walk across the acres of parking lots and empty fields.
The cost of hosting this event would far exceed any promotional value it would gain.
Unlike Reid, Nevada prostitutes admit they're whores.
