The Times has reported that Argentina is taking control over all shipping between its coast and the Falkand Islands, effectively awarding itself the power to blockade the disputed territory.
As The Times notes,
According to a decree issued by President Kirchner, all ships sailing through the waters claimed by Argentina must hold a permit. The measure looks set to deepen a row over conflicting claims to oil beds lying inside the Falklands territorial waters
Todays decree amounts to an Argentinian move to control all traffic from South America towards the islands, including an oil rig due to arrive today and start drilling next year.

We love you too, America, even if you are a failing superpower.
Politics and principle.
81 actually, plus a civilian volunteer and a 3” mortar with a cracked tube :)
I dont suppose the televised play “A most ungentlemanly act” ever made it to America?
Please let me know when you plan to cruise to Bermuda. Thanks. ;)
The US would be well advised to keep out of this, but it wasn’t the oil that changed the UK government’s mind. There had been talk of oil and fish around the Falklands for year. The UK Foreign office wanted shot of the islands, but unfortunately for them, the Islanders didnt want any of it.
If it were up to the UK Foreign Office, Gibralter would have been given back to Spain following the death of Franco. The natives (who are themselves a motley mix of retired servicemen, Sephardi Jews, dislocated Maltese, and Hindu shopkeepers) beg to differ. However, it has become VERY expensive to maintain these little colonies, with the UK national budget being stretched as it is.
Oh yeah, the Foreign office wants shot of them all. Personally I find the loyalty of the kelpers and the Gibraltese very inspiring.
Actually Jeane Kirkpatrick wanted the US to openly support Argentina, it was Reagan and Weinburger who wanted remain neutral thus they had Kirkpatrick be silenced. Besides at that point Argentina was eliminating more than just the commies.
Not quite, the overwhelming majority of the cells that were smashed during the so-called "Dirty War" were either Soviet/Cuban backed or allied. Those "Mothers" should have done a better job not encouraging their kids to be leftist agitators. They have NO symphathy from me, and the Argentine military deserves our respect for smashing a left-wing insurgency more successfully than the Brits ever did.
That being said, complete neutrality is what is demanded here. Those on this site who cheer on the UK here are nothing more than the spiritual descendants of the League of Empire Loyalists.
