Anyhow, to study the koran, one used to have to learn arabic.

I recall reading that extreme fundamentalist (jihadi) types will kill you if you admit reading the koran in a language other than arabic. Apparently it is forbidden on penalty of death to even translate it. To quote from it in another language is an insult to islam and to allah.

Well, I guess they’ve got another reason to hate me! I bought a translated copy about 12 years ago! (From a university bookstore—it figures.)
