Ayer's father was on the board of General Dynamics which had a number of DoD contracts, many of which were to develop future weapons. Those guys get a Proctoscope background check before even being considered for such an appointment.
So it's possible - sorta unlikely, but possible.

With all due respect, the far left is probably laughing their demented asses off reading some of the comments on this thread. Why is it so freaking easy to fool people on our side with insanity such as this? Then again, plenty of liberals get duped into believing all kinds of kooky things as well (Bush-Cheney 911 conspiracy, etc).
