U.S. Sen. John McCain has picked up the endorsement of former actor and Sen. Fred Thompson while opponent J.D. Hayworth gets ready for an event with Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and State Sen. Russell Pearce.
Hayworth and McCain, seeking a fifth term, are battling in the Republican Senate primary this year.
Thompson a former senator from Tennessee and actor on the Law & Order television show announced his endorsement Wednesday. McCain and Thompson both ran for president in 2008.
Im for John McCain. I hope he gets re-elected. Ill help him get re-elected if I can. Its more important for me, and I believe for the country, to have McCains leadership and the respect that he brings to bear on an issue. When he takes the floor on a national security matter. When he takes the floor and leads the intellectual effort the for the surge. When, without his efforts, I dont think we would have ever had a surge and therefore we would never have had a victory in Iraq, Thompson said.
Hayworth, Thomas and Pearce will appear together Feb. 24 in Tempe. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio also backs Hayworth over long-time foe McCain.

Aren’t everybody here Mittbots? After all, it’s only the MittBots who attacked Fred Thompson, and it was the Mittbots who made the “rediculous” claims that Fred was in the race to help McCain get elected. And now that’s all everybody on this thread is doing — so I assumed the usual suspects would be along any minute to defend Thompson from the evil Mitt Romney Machine.
I never thought that defending Fred Thompson would get me attacked for being a former Mitt Romney supporter.
Of course, I was also a Fred Thompson supporter who won’t abandon him just because of an endorsement.
"I raised taxes because children need roads." ~ Huckabee, 2008 RNC debates
Yeah, that's clearly a conservative position.
Too bad you Huckanuts don't realize that the Christian label does NOT always mean conservative.
There’s simply no logical reason why McCain needs to run for another term.
Really? Sorta like Huckabee staying in the race so Romney wouldn’t win? I loathe all three of those RINOS but Huckabee was just as much a stalking horse as Fred was. Huckebee knew he had no chance of winning the nom. Yet, he stuck around too. And Huck calling on Romney to drop out of the race when he had hundreds more delegates than Huckabee did? Yeah, pretty clear there was more than one horse.
Fred, go out and campaign for him. Maybe you’ll put the audience to sleep and they’ll forget why they are there.
What a creep.
The Old Boys Club always closes ranks to protect their vested interests - employment sinecures at the public trough.
Can't but it is still early. However, this is a good barometer of what we, the people are up against. Our politicians are sticking together and guess what? So are we and there are more of us.
why? Fred endorsed him in 2000 when ran for President.
You would think absolutely NOBODY on FR voted for McCain.
This is a hilarious thread! :)
I like Fred T., we’re just going to disagree on this issue.
No big deal.
I tried to tell everyone here about Fred and McCain, but no one would listen. He was part of the set up to get McCain nominated. This just proves it, he was laughing at all of you.
Well....I agree with you on that one!
“Fred is very disappointing.”
Well, there goes the pretentions about Fred being a strong conservative. He would have been better to keep his mouth shut on this one! Wonder if he and Sarah spoke on the subject (I like Sarah still, but this is getting to be a pretty edgy topic.)
Also, JD isn’t perfect (no one is), but comes down right on the issues.
Looks like I will be sitting on my wallet for another election cycle. The GOP Rino party still doesn’t get it.

++++++++++++++++
I feel the same way about Palin...it’s still not ‘cool’ to be truly conservative (thanks to the last spasms of the RAT press)...but you CAN be a principled conservative and win elections - and sometimes mealy mouthed, worthless, squishy centrists win elections too - like McCain’s done...
We’ve got to decide to fight for our principles! (which we are doing.)
Oppose McLame...
“Name one sitting politician who has endorsed Hayworth.”
I saw some county GOP chair that was standing behind Hayworth the other day, in a pic...but probly not publicly elected...and you’re probably looking for some national presence...:)
Hayworth may have undone himself a bit with his past connections to Abramoff (sp?) I hope that can be kept a past issue.
Sherriff Joe Aprio
McQueeg needs to go away. For all of the reasons I've been saying here on FR for the last 10+ years.
I am very disappointed in Fred for this. He was my #2 pick for Prez last election, Duncan Hunter being #1.
I see Fred based his support of McLame on national security, an area in which J. D. Hayworth is very good.
Most revealing are the areas Fred did not mention: open doors for illegals and amnesty, cap and tax, and being a part of various “gangs of _____ (insert your own number)” doing all sorts of mischief.
Since five out of six years of every term McLame has won has shown he likes to run elbows with those “across the aisle” more than with those of his own party, why doesn’t McLame have Chris Dodd, John F. Kerry, and Barbara Boxer come in and campaign for him?
McLame has pretty well defined himself over the years. I don’t think his habit of trying to present himself as something he is not every six years will work this time. I also don’t think endorsements from Thompson, Palin, or anyone else will do him a lot of good.
Go J. D. Hayworth.
