Las Vegas mayor snubs Obama

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has a very busy schedule. After all, the city has a budget deficit, and even after that, Goodman has to bolster tourism to keep the local economy running, and Vegas has had some setbacks on that front. Goodman doesn’t have time for frivolities … like accepting a meeting with the President of the United States on his next visit:

Mayor Oscar Goodman has refused an invitation to meet with President Obama when he arrives in town on Thursday. Mayor Goodman called President Obama a slow learner after he told Americans not to blow money on a weekend in Las Vegas if they were saving to put their kids through college.

“I’ve got other things to do quite frankly for my constituents here in Las Vegas who rely on me to do the right thing as a mayor,” explained Mayor Goodman. … “I haven’t heard an apology, I haven’t heard a response, all I do is get invitations,” Goodman went on to say.

Give it a rest. It’s not Obama’s fault Las Vegas didn’t diversify their economy.

Vegas has almost nothing in the way of natural resources, is surrounded by protected state and fed land, and receives about 4 inches of rain per year. Geographically speaking, it's truly a brutal place.

Yet until the recent housing bubble, which has detrimentally affected Vegas more than any other site, the city was/is an amazing entrepreneurial success story. It may take several years for the housing market to return, but it will.

Now all that said, what type of industrial diversification should the city pursue?

“0bama and the Democrats were free to cook up an $800 billion stimulus bill that helped not one private sector worker. Any jobs created or saved went to gov’t employed drones such as school teachers”

Mayor Goodman is spot on here.

“It’s not Obama’s fault Las Vegas didn’t diversify their economy.”

The topography and climate are not conducive to wide spread “diversification”

Should there be any surprise that a Mayor should choose responsibility over a photo op with the biggest fraud to be elected POTUS?

Let Barry campaign without the appearance of any real business taking place.

Why should the good Mayor allow himself to be used?

I can see Las Vegas not being happy but Obama was really attacking the average American (as usual), not Las Vegas.

Las Vegas's economy is much more diversified then it was 10 years ago. Is it diverse enough? Absolutely not. But that doesn't mean our Mayor should sit by and let Obama slam our major industry time and again. Even if we are successful in diversifying more, the strip WILL ALWAYS BE the primary economic driver in this town. If the good Mayor Goodman didn't go to bat for us I'd be very disappointed in him.

The ironic thing is that the people who are most hurt by Obama's seeming obsession with Vegas are those who likely voted for him: low-wage union folks working in the casinos. Unbelievable.

We get the distinction, but the continual use of Las Vegas as an example of how not to spend one's money sure doesn't help. Maybe Obama ought to quit telling everyone how to spend their money and focus on the cash-hemmorage coming out of Washington right now.

True, but also not Obama's fault. He states something common sense that got the Chamber of Commerce's panties in a twist.

There is more than enough to criticize Obama about. Making a big deal out of his common sense TRUE statement about personal responsibility is a loss for Las Vegas. It just makes them look petty and pathetic.

I went to the original site and voted in the poll. I really hesitated, as it seemed rude and maybe unwise to shun an invitation from a President. It might, I thought, work to O’s advantage.

But, in the end, I voted with the Mayor. Obama deserves no respect and maybe this gesture will give others the courage to ignore him.

Most people in the poll were with the mayor.

Still say it’s the ultimate “turf war” Years ago my dad’a cousin was AG of Nevada...I was a teen ager one of the few times he visited. Only thing that pops in my head was his comment that when ever they found a male body they sent the finger prints back to Chicago for ID....the turf war was going on way back then and no doubt continues today.

Mayor Goldman is probably better connected than the 0.

The mayor should put up billboards up all over town with ozero’s and reid’s mugs on them with the message that these two guys brought us this mess.

That's a great idea.

I'd also love to see the casino's exterior lighting go dark (assuming Zero's going to drive through the strip). Maybe they can do it for the entire time he's in town.

Give it a rest. It’s not Obama’s fault Las Vegas didn’t diversify their economy.

It IS obama's fault that he singled out an American city, thus the citizen that reside there, and made disparaging comments about it, basically saying "Do not support this city, and its inhabitants". Worse, he did it for no reason other than for populous political gain. Again, his actions show that he does not care one iota for the average person in America, other than how far they can benefit him, and his agenda, personally.
