Lebanese troops open fire on Israeli warplane
Miami Herald ^

BEIRUT -- Lebanon says its army has opened fire on four Israeli warplanes that flew into Lebanese airspace.

The Lebanese army said in a statement that its units used anti-aircraft fire Sunday to force the Israeli warplanes out of Lebanese airspace.

The army said the planes were in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley in the central Lebanon.

Israeli warplanes frequently fly over Lebanese airspace in what Israel says are reconnaissance missions. The overflights have been a constant source of tension between the two countries.

Sunday's events come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following some of the sharpest exchanges in years between Israel and its Arab neighbors.

Happens several times every year. Just meaningless anti-aircraft fire in protest.

IAF flies over Lebanon every day. Now and again the Lebanese fire a few shots.

If they think there is tension now, wait till Hezbollah starts to fire rockets again.

I thought the IAF were now relying on their drones for reconnaissance?

If this whole Hezbollah invasion thing comes off, there won’t be much of South Lebanon left.

*ping* . . . might happen several times a year, but conditiions are anything but ordinary and any little incident has the potential to be the fuse that lights the next major conflagration . . . .

I'm guessing if they can spot you in the sky or on radar, no matter where you are, that constitutes Lebanese airspace? Gotta love Muslim logic!

I’m certain that the Israelis couldn’t care less, given that the troops in question are still alive.

I’ve been hearing jet engines overhead all day, all under cover of clouds, impossible to tell the direction of flight, only that they were not going at maximum speed. How relevant this is or isn’t, I couldn’t say. But it’s a piece of the puzzle, anyway.

Don’t fly over other people air space unless you want to be shot at. We learned that in the “no fly” zone over Iraq.

The coming conflict, if there is one, won't be confined to South Lebanon.

That's true, I doubt Israel is any more concerned than we were overflying Iraq. I assume the flights are necessary, and it does give Lebanon the chance to choose sides.

Indeed. Bibi should come out and tell the Israeli Arabs just what the penalties will be for collaborating with Hezbollah.

Just conducting some recon of Hezbollah positions in the Bekka, pretty much a daily occurence. However, the past few weeks the Lebanese have been more apt to fire ack-ack at the IAF than they have in the past.
