Curiously enough, virtually no mention is being made of this fact. You can bet that if a conservative flipped out and did something like that (even if she wounded whites as well, as this woman appears to have done), the whole thing would have been described as a racist assault.
But once again Ann Bishop is being protected because she is that most blessed of species, the ur-liberal from Liberal Land.

You don't need a permit to purchase or own a firearm in Alabama, despite what the NYT might think.
You do need one to carry concealed, and it's against the rules of the University to bring a gun on campus, a student might be expelled and a faculty or staff member might be fired. But as always, those intent on doing murder and mayhem don't observe the rules.
But even if she had needed a permit, and been denied one, she was a Professor of BioChemistry, with access to all sort of chemicals and the knowledge to make "good" use of them. I'm sure she could have come up something even nastier. Bomb, chemical weapon, even a biological one.
Indeed, Dr. Johnson worked with the Boy Scouts, that probably makes him a high tech redneck.

I agree entirely with your point. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that teaching is at the bottom of the list when it comes to faculty responsibilities. What universities want most is for their faculty to bring in grant funding and to increase the university stature through publications. Teaching is just one of those ‘irritating’ things that they have to do.

Ironically, one of the stated purposes of tenure is to ensure that academics can be free thinkers without worrying about dismissal, but you can’t survive long in a university environment if you don’t follow the liberal party line.

She killed them because even affirmative action wasn’t enough to get her tenure in a second tier university. After having enjoyed unearned applause all of her life she become homocidal when reality began to intrude.
