Patrick Kennedy won't seek reelection

Rhode Island Democratic Rep. Patrick Kennedy, the last member of his illustrious family currently serving in Congress, will announce on Friday that he is retiring, according to Democratic insiders.

Kennedy, 42, was first elected to Congress in 1994. He did a stint as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in the 1999-2000 cycle but has not served in the House Democratic leadership beyond that.

His congressional tenure was marked by repeated substance abuse problems, including a drunk-driving incident in 2006. He entered a rehab facility at that time and again in 2009.

Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), the congressman's father, passed away last year. Democrats unexpectedly lost his seat last month to Republican Scott Brown.

I just can't see that. The guy's a drug addict and out of control.

Who would want that in Congress, supposedly representing them?

Old Teddy, they probably figured when he wasn't sober, his staff had been on board long enough that they could run things.

This guy would be starting all by himself, from square one.

That's ++Tobin of RI. Patches's bishop.

Kennedy tangled with him a little while ago. ++Tobin had written him privately quite some time ago - almost a year I think - cautioning him that he was violating the Church's teaching in voting for abortion.

Kennedy decided after his daddy died to make the correspondence public, figuring that sympathy for Ted would get everybody in his corner.

He didn't figure on ++Tobin being a vertebrate bishop. He said, "Fine, you take it public - let's rumble!" and delivered another blast not only chastising Patches all over again, but chastising him for making a private, pastoral correspondence public.

Patches took a rubber knife to a gunfight.

[Nit - not full-size, not a Ford:]

Laughing my head off. Try looking for a truck exactly like his, in the same dark green color, super cab style, and from a full side view - not at a slant.

Not easy to find one for cutting out.

Only the top one would work, the others are at angles. I searched but didn’t come across that one.

Ping me when you have it cut out and animated, snicker....

Are that boy’s eyes crossed? I swear looking at that particular picture, you know there isn’t a brain in his head.

Patrick Kennedy would have lost had he run. He had dangerously high negatives. So this is a loss for Republicans. They have a credible candidate in state House Minority Leader John Loughlin, but he’ll have a harder time now that he won’t have Patches to kick around anymore.

So for the first time in 50 years we will have no Kennedy’s in Washington? Fantastic.
