The actor who played the drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket is coming to Washington, D.C., next week to lobby Congress to pass a long-stalled bill.
R. Lee Ermey is the national spokesman for a growing grassroots effort behind legislation sponsored by Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) that would rename the Department of the Navy as the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps.
Ermey, who was in the Marine Corps for 11 years, has been in over 100 movies, including Apocalypse Now, Dead Man Walking and Leaving Las Vegas, according to imdb.com.
Over the past decade, Jones has repeatedly pushed his colleagues to pass his bill. Joness bill has 367 co-sponsors. Roberts (R-Kan.), a Marine Corps veteran, introduced companion legislation last year.
The Marine Corps League, which is orchestrating the grassroots effort with Ermey, has started a petition-writing campaign and is bringing supporters of Joness legislation to Capitol Hill on Thursday.
Marines have fought and died with their Navy brothers and sisters for more than 200 years, said Michael Blum, Marine Corps League executive director in a statement. Its finally time to give the Marine Corps the recognition the branch has long deserved.
Although the Marine Corps has been a separate service since the National Security Act of 1947, it does not get equal billing with the Navy, Air Force and Army, each of which has a Pentagon department named after it. Since the Marine Corpss earliest days, it has operated under the Department of the Navy.

Yes, those are great. She has always been a classy lady and unfailing in her support for her Gentlemen. It’s a shame we don’t have many like her for our troops today.
I’d settle for just changing it from the Defense Department back to the WAR Department.
Soldiers of the Sea. Ooooorah!
Woo Hoo! Thanks for that Ping Jaz! You Rock!!!
It’s 3:00 p.m. EST and those prayers are up for you all Pop. Behind you and with you in spirit.
Git R Done.:)
“To Hell with that. Just separate the two and have a Dept. of the Marine Corps!”
To hell with that. Just more useless beurocratic overhead and cost.
Disband all the “departments” and make it a single War Department. Put the Commandant of Marines at its head.
We’d need a unified military uniform. No more of this separate suits for each service nonsense. USMC uniform issue is the best looking and most functional, so it should be it.
Just think of all the extra MAUs and MABs that could be made out of all those Army and Air Force peeps.
Both the US Army and the US Navy have a long history of trying to abolish, destroy, do away with the USMC. Time the tables were turned.
Semper Fi.
Could be something else we need more...

Think I might have forgotten you in the update Ping. Sorry if I did. Check out #56.
“Disband all the departments and make it a single War Department. Put the Commandant of Marines at its head.”
I could go along with that! One giant USMC! (Except all the other pogues would have to go thru Boot Camp!)
The Marine Corps is a department of the navy—the mens’ department.
I hate to sound like a dud. But I don’t think this will go very far.
I am for it. But the Navy will have to many objections and win out against it most likely.
I think it's time the Squids give credit where credit is due. It appears pretentious on their part to not share the name credit with the actual boots on the ground.
Sounds good to me. Hope it can work out. And with that I have to hit the rack. Do have a great upcoming day.
Same to you Uncle.
